dear rksv,
How to convert the carry forward option contract from nrml to mis to have margin benifit usually it is done from trade book.but in trade book only current trades are available for conversion not the trades done on previous day that carry forward today.is the only option to release margin money is to squre off the open position.while trding in zerodha the carry forward position becomes intraday position automatically and releases the margin accordingly.hope i am not confusing you.

Hi mprakash,

The way we have structured our risk is to separate futures orders/trades into MIS and NRML. If you place trades in MIS, it is with the intention that it will be squared off by the end of the day so we give you the margin. If you place it in NRML, it is with the intention of carry-forward.

If we give you margin on NRML and you are over the margin limit at 3:15, we have to arbitrarily close some of your positions. For many clients, this can be a hassle since we won't know which positions to square off and which ones to hold. Because of this drawback, we moved forward with creating two product types so that clients that want to trade on margin can use MIS.

Now, the ideal situation would be if the exchange allowed us to convert carry-forward positions from NRML to MIS but that functionality isn't there as of now. We can work with the exchange to request the feature.

Best,

RKSV

Guys,

Thanks for all of your support! After more than a month of launch, we have had the opportunity to interact with some of the best customers ever :thumb:.

This was also a great way for us to learn more about what you guys all want and what we can do next to help. We have used the past month and a half to work hard on improving our systems, service and support. We have some good news for all of you! Margin requirements for futures have now dropped from 60% applicable margin to 50% :D And it won't stop there. We are working on getting it down more and working on giving you more leverage on equity.

On options, we are now moving to a single product code -- NRML. We have noticed that most of our clients actually use NRML and not many use MIS. If you buy options, there's no difference in the margin required for MIS vs NRML since you are required to pay the premium amount. However, for selling options, there won't be a margin benefit through NRML. The reason is that there is that since you already get a premium amount back from the exchange AND a margin benefit, you can increase your a/c balance by writing options in MIS. This poses a huge risk for a broker like us. Anyways, we have personally called all of our clients who utilize this and they don't mind it :) A very small percentage of them were doing this.

On stocks against margin (for my_investment :)), we are not ready to provide the same as of yet. I know we promised we'd get it up in 2 months but there are issues working with IL&FS on it. We will try to work something on our end so that once it's up, EVERYONE has access to it and it's super easy to do it.

We're working hard on improving things on our end. Margin benefits is the #1 feature requested by our clients. We're also working on bringing other benefits in the future :).

Best,

RKSV
