Cyber Security

Cool. Hopefully we will also benefit from your experiments/experiences with these :)
Well, yesterday I went through a few video tutorials related to "Virtual Machines" and finally I choosed the following one which is now on my OS:

Ubuntu 13.04 on Virtualbox

- VirtualBox download link: https://www.virtualbox.org

How to install the VirtualBox in full: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eno4l6pKQHc

- Ubuntu for Desktop download link: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop

How to install "Ubuntu" into the VirtualBox: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0WiiswmOH1Q and also watch this one before you start with any installation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JH29ALyraG4

Important: You need a few CPU's in your computer, as other wise the virtual machine will be very slow. If you do not know what a CPU is, here a link to read in: http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/cpu-technology-explained/.

Here a tool to check how many and which CPU's you have: http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html or you go to "Devise Manager" and check there how many processor you have.

After installing this virtual machine, if you want, you made an other step to stay a bit safer in the net. Your Trading platform you do not run in this virtual machine instead only on your normal OS.

Have a nice day / Dan :)

Thanks for reply Dan !
Does this mean that we should avoid all those sites using Flash Player?
Most of the finance related sites make use of Flash player as well as Java.
Hi Amit

One simple method for doing this would be to change the settings within firefox, so that it asks you, if you want to run flash on a given site. It can also remember your answer for those sites, so you do not have to keep telling it again and again.

Go to firefox/tools > addons > plugins and set shockwave flash to ask to activate. then the plugin will stay disabled per default but can be activated on a per-site basis.

I use this method and I am satisfied with it.

Hi

Ever heard about the tool "Detekt"?

Detekt is a free tool that scans your Windows computer for traces of FinFisher and Hacking Team RCS, commercial surveillance spyware that has been identified to be also used to target and monitor human rights defenders and journalists around the world beside others.

HOW DOES IT WORK? https://resistsurveillance.org/#waypoint2

- Before launching the tool, close all applications and make sure the computer is disconnected from the Internet. if spyware is detected, you should not reconnect the computer to the Internet again until it has been cleaned. We recommend that you disable your Antivirus software to prevent possible interference or false positives.

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF DETEKT IDENTIFIES SPYWARE? https://resistsurveillance.org/emergency.html

- Realizing that you've been targeted and that your computer has been compromised and infected can be very distressing. That's why it's important to respond carefully and calmly by seeking immediate assistance.

- Firstly, stop using the infected computer immediately and disconnect it from the Internet, other network and removable devices, unless strictly necessary. Every key you press, every website you open and every email you could be monitored.

- Secondly, decide whether to dispose of the computer or keep it and seek further assistance to investigate the attack and help you to safely recover your computer. We suggest that you speak with an expert to help you make this decision.

- When seeking assistance, we recommend that you use a different computer and also consider connecting to the Internet from a different place than you do normally, for example from an Internet Cafe or a public Wi-Fi.

Want to know more and even check your own system? Here the link: https://resistsurveillance.org (Be advised that the tool at this time not works on Windows 8.1)

Have a nice day / Dan :)

Hi

Do we have any active VPN users here who even visit this thread regularly? If so, what could you tell about VPN from your side and what kind of VPN service are you currently using? If you use a payed service, did you test some free software before that or how did you find the way to it?

For those who do not know what VPN is, here a link to get more information about it: http://whatismyipaddress.com/vpn

Take care / Dan :)

Thanks Kaly422000 for your comments and your concerns for others when it comes to free software and even to paid onces. :thumb:

To avoid certain traps before we install any kind of new software we always do follow certain rules:

- Set a recovery date/point in our system before installing any new software.
- We also do inform our self about how deep the installed software we want to install goes into our systems.
- We even have to be aware how we can remove new installed software from our system in case we did make any mistake when installing it.

If we follow those simple rules at all the time in a disciplined manner at all the times, even they take some time before we install any software on our systems, we will have less problems with any software (if now free or paid) as we know in most cases how to act in case it went wrong.

If you did follow my previous posts, you know that we even can do a virtual system on our basic system and test there what ever we want to test.

Now to test the next level, VPN is the topic and VPN we even can use for our virtual box to connect with the net.

Take care and have a nice weekend / Dan :)

Very important. For creating a system restore point, (try it with an experienced user to learn it), right click on "My computer", then click on "Properties".

Then click on "System protection" (in the LHS panel).

You will see a screen like this, but do not click on anything unless you are an experienced user or you may end up doing some damage :). You are supposed to click on "Create", but get someone to show it to you first.
