Considering today's times and inflation status, if one were to live only on dividend payouts (no special expenses), just middle class living, how big should be one's portfolio?
Assuming India will continue to remain overvalued in the future as well, and hence no permanent loss of capital happens, on the safer side you should be able to draw 0.5% monthly (aggressive is 1.0%). And still grow the portfolio till eternity. So on a crore of portfolio you can get a 50k monthly income and it would be an inflation adjusted income and if all is well this crore could become much more in future and you monrhly income will grow in future as well accordingly. Only hitch is if 2008 kind of crash happens then you will have to compromise on your lifestyle or have other sources of income as well.
Middle class family spends about Rs 40,000 to 50,000 pm on living expenses, travel, children's education, medical expenses etc so if one has a mutual fund/ or shares portfolio of Rs 1 Cr he can get Rs 1 Lac as income per month assuming CAGR of 12 %.....He can spend 40,000-50,000 and the remaining Rs 50,000 he can invest to take care of the inflation....so Rs 1 Cr is the bare minimum one should have provided he has a debt free house of his own...

Better idea is not draw unless required, so no headache of reinvestment. If you still draw entire amount i believe its better to invest in debt to diversify
Same is true with Maruti.....Rs 2 L invested in Maruti shares rather than buying a Maruti 800 car in 2003 is worth over 1.5 Cr today....and one can buy a BMW or Merc with that money and still have some money left...
Same is true of Asian Paints,HDFC Bank and many other stocks....
