If govt invests 70,000 crores in tourism development in India, it will create far more jobs year after year.
It will not only help govt earn direct/indirect taxes but also help earn foreign exchange as more visitors come into the country. It can also help many other associated sectors thrive. Instead of focusing on temporary fixes by giving tax payers money, government should focus on long term model that not only create jobs but also help in wealth creation for the country.
India has a country is a great destination for tourism. There are very few countries in the world that can boast of tropical beaches and snow capped mountain to deserts to rain forests, from snow leopards to elephants to snakes we have it all. From kashmir to kanyakumari our land is so diverse. From yoga to vedic maths, from ayurveda to martial arts we have it all. From idli, dosa, sambhar to biryani, kebabs and yakni we have it all.

Look at a country like thailand where tourism contributes close to 18-20% of their GDP. Some greenery, temples and beaches and sex tourism. Thats all they have. But they have managed to survive and thrive with it. We have more than thailand but still under utilized. Tourism in India contributes less than 9% of GDP and employs only a 8% of people directly/indirectly.

Can you imagine the potential we have? Its mind boggling. Kerala which has not many industries survives mostly on tourism. So is Goa now after the mining ban.
Impetus and business acumen should be imparted to home owners for managing home stay facilities.
A few things like better connectivity, better roads, better sanitation and hygiene, better medical care (close to tourist places) will go long way in boosting tourism. We are sitting on a cash cow not knowing how to use it.

Edit: I forgot medical tourism all together. We have very good doctors in India and our best hospitals can be compared with top hospitals anywhere in the world. With cheaper medicines and cheaper rooms rates and competitive doctor fees, India can be a top destination for all sorts of surgeries and treatments.
Bhai.. correct..
Unfortunately all the state govt does is putting red tape in everything in name of tourism.. Ones any file riches to sarkari Babu remains there forever..
Then these so called environmentalists..
The go to court for every case where the tourism industry thrives.
River rafting in Uttaranchal was banned due to all these things now you can't camp near ganga ..however in Himachal I have seen camps near beas.
Most of the mountain land here is under NGT.. you can't construct anything..
And funny thing is govt gives subsidy for industrialisation and not tourism where tourism can be major industry.

Yes sadly river rafting claimed a few lives. But thats not a big problem. So many people lose lives on highways but govt doesnt ban cars.
Camping near ganga may seen as an environmental hazard but that can be taken care of by stricter compliance by tour operators. Again not a big issue. A ban is not a solution. If a tourist doesnt throw a plastic near camp, he/she will throw it elsewhere which will all end up in the ganga finally.

Should not allow construction on mountains and very close to rivers that flood. Agreed.! But that should not stop tourist activity. Govt has plenty of land for development elsewhere.

Edit: Moreoever, india's economy growth lies in the semi urban and rural areas. Govt should focus there more.

If we got a Thailand or Bangkok in India it would be really great .. world class facilities and economical stay would boost forex inflows !!!

More than that, I just wish we kept our country a lot less filthy. That should help. Uttarakhand must be left alone like that - pristine and divine the way it is. Environmental protectionism must be there.

Absolutely! Im was in goa so I will talk about it. Goa's economy was mainly dependent on mining and tourism. After mining ban, Goa has still managed to hold its own via tourism. In goa, we have no tax or very little tax on Alcohol which is a major attraction for tourists. Tax on alcohol is a major source of revenue for the govt. What the government foregoes via no-less tax on alcohol, the govt makes up for it in other ways. Net affect is still a decent economy as people have jobs etc.

The problem in india is that no state takes the initiative on tourism. They wait for the center. Also, since we are a diverse nation, we are very confused about how we market ourselves globally. Without proper goals and milestones, we are unlikely to make much progress in tourism.
