Body Language

..Why you shouldn't trust someone who scratches his or her nose!

Body gestures say a lot about a person - whether they look up or scratch their nose, or even tilt their head.

Now, body language expert Peter Collett, author of the 'Book Of Tells' talks about the different gestures people make and what they mean.

SCRATCHING NOSE: When you're not telling the truth, you instinctively want to cover up the source of the lie - your mouth - so no one can see you're fibbing. But because that's too obvious, people disguise it by scratching their nose.

LOOKING UP: if you look up you're seeking help from above. People with a sense of self-importance also do it, suggesting they're in contact with the Almighty, reports the Daily Mail.

BLINKING: It's a sign someone's worried, excited or even lying as they're under stress and thinking very rapidly.

LIP NIBBLING: Lip nibbling, whether biting the lower lip or a corner of the mouth with the upper teeth, prevents someone from speaking, so it's used by people who want to stop themselves from saying something.

TILTING HEAD: Often used by a woman to flirt and appear more attractive.

It appeals to a man because it lowers her height; -mimics a baby putting its head on its mother's shoulder; and exposes the neck. As the neck is one of the most vulnerable parts of your body, showing it to someone is a way of saying, "I trust you implicitly."

FURROWED BROWS: Lowering the brows is a dominance gesture used mainly by men, which tells people, "I may be looking at you, but I'm in charge."

SHIFTING WEIGHT: When you want to escape from a conversation, you shift your weight from side to side or back to front.

Men also sometimes do this when chatting to a pretty girl to make themselves appear energetic.

OPEN HANDS: Showing the palms of your hands is a friendly -gesture showing that you have peaceful intentions. It indicates acceptance, good intentions and that you're open to new ideas.

Hiding them, on the other hand, shows that you don't want to give anything away.

FOOT POINT

The way your foot is facing indicates what you're thinking. Follow the line of someone's foot and it will show you what they're most interested in - if it's the door, they want to leave. (ANI)

RIL made a profit of about Rs 500 crore from the sale of Reliance Petroleum shares. The potential penalty could thus be Rs 1,500 crore — which is a little more than the turnover of Godrej Consumer Products (Rs 1,267.88 crore in 2009-10

Budget will aim to enhance purchasing power, says Pranab

NEW DELHI: Barely days ahead of presenting the Union budget, finance minister Pranab Mukherjee hinted at steps to enhance common man’s purchasing power. “If I cannot increase his purchasing power , then, he cannot afford to buy products. Therefore, this is the exercise which we shall have to take up,” Mukherjee said in the Rajya Sabha during Question Hour.

He was responding to comments by JD-U member Shivanand Tewari , who suggested that the purchasing capacity of common man should be commensurate with economic growth. “I will have to say that this is the effort which the government will have to make,” the finance minister said.

However, Mukherjee said some inflationary pressure would be there in a growing economy. “In a growing economy, it is very difficult to say that there will be no inflationary pressures... Some impact would be there.” Mukherjee said a report of a committee of chief ministers on price rise is expected soon. But states need to amend their market regulated acts to reduce the gap between the price being given to the producer and being taken from the consumer (farmgate and kitchen plate) price.

Food inflation, which hurts the common man most, is still ruling in the double digits despite some moderation in recent weeks. Mukherjee admitted that the government cannot control the prices due to other external factors but can reduce its adverse impact on people by strengthening the public distribution system.

But, he said, it is the responsibility of the policy-makers and the government to ensure that the price rise is within a manageable level. Steps are being taken both by removing the supply constraints and through monetary policy, he added.

Anil Ambani meets Maha CM

MUMBAI: Industrialist Anil Ambani met Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan in the backdrop of reports that the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) was mulling a coastal road from Worli to Haji Ali and from Haji Ali to Nariman Point.

The meeting assumes significance as the Ambani-led Reliance-Hyundai consortium last year won the Rs 5,000 crore contract to extend the Bandra-Worli Sealink till Haji Ali.

The consortium was unable to tie up funds by the December 2010 deadline and sought a three-month extension for the same.

The coastal road option is being discussed to save cost. MSRDC sources say the coastal road option will help save the government over Rs 3000 crore.

An official from Chavan's office said the one on one meeting between Chavan and Ambani took place at the state government's Sahyadri guest house here last night and lasted around half an hour.

The official, however, declined to divulge details.
