TP sir had recently posted about Tata Sons will have to buy out SP stake after their fallout but it is strapped for cash... does TCS buyback have something to do with this, especially odd when the share price is already so high?
yes, if Tata Sons sell shares in open market, tcs will plummet due to promotor 'not having faith in company' So best is to reduce number of stocks in circulation so leftover retains value.

I expect higher dividend from tata group companies too (even if they are consistently loss making)

no, i dont think so. And buyback % is generally very small, ie. # of shares getting retired.

TCS has a strong previous record of buyback, when they've had a lot of cash surplus. The buyback recent history is 2017 and 2018, now in 2020 so one can imagine the revenue it is churning. Maybe not able to redeploy all the cash.
Yaar, 10L Cr Co and did buybacks of 16K Cr last 2 times. Itna tho dividend bhi aa jata hai.
