Retail investors did not benefit from wealth creation in stock market: Kotak Securities
http://economictimes.indiatimes.com...ket-kotak-securities/articleshow/47187102.cms

A report by Kotak Securities shows that almost 25% of the Indian stock market, comprising BSE-200 Index, is owned by foreign investors. Indian retail investors own only 7.1% of the market directly, and another 10.1% through life insurance companies and mutual funds, while this figure has not changed much over the past few years.

Ironically, Indian households have invested about $207 bn in gold over the past seven financial years, while foreign investors have invested $103 bn in India's equity market. It seems that Indians have bought foreign gold as the country imports its entire gold consumption, while foreigners have purchased the Indian equity.
No surprise actually and I agree with what this write up is trying to show. Our Indian family/mentality (or whatever you can call) still thinks that investment means FD, Gold and Real State. It's like carved in the brain. Off late, we have started seeing more of people doing mutual fund investment in past few years. But number of people who even know or understand equity market are still way too minimal. People who hear about stock market from friends/office colleague are usually the ones who put money without knowledge..burn hands and then spread the words of mouth that stock market is not for investment..money always vanishes in thin air :)

Globally, the ratio of retail participants in stock market is much much higher than what we see in India. But I'm sure as other things are taking shape and moving towards growth in India, we will see high number of retail participants in time to come... afterall we are the 2nd largest chunk of people on the face of earth. ;)

see this video.. just to show how common ppl think about stock markets. (vid doesn't cover a lot of things but we can take it for small understanding)

What the stock market can teach you about your own personality

Professional stock investing, with its sharp ups and downs, can teach us a lot about life. Money brings out the insecurity, fear and irrationality that we might otherwise keep hidden in polite society. Investing isn’t just a test of strategy– it’s a test of character, and what we do when investing is very often what we believe about ourselves.
