Cash Flows vs Profit Number

I discussed this red flag in the book. It's one of those things which really psyche people out.

Many people are lured in by a profit and loss statement (which looks juicy), and they fail to spot that the company is running out of cash.

You should always check that operating profits (EBIT) in the profit and loss statement tell the same story as the "Cash Flow from Operating Activities" from the cash flow statement.

Suppose the operating profit (EBIT) in the profit and loss statement shows profitable growth over the years and the cash flow statement shows a downward trend.

That is a red flag all by itself. It means the company is just billing customers left right and center and booking profits, but there is no cash.
