Breaking: Fukushima Could be 15,000x Worse than Hiroshima with Removal of Fuel Rods
by Christina Sarich
September 28th, 2013

A Yale Professor is compelling the world to wake up from its nuclear slumber and face some cold-hard facts, “All of humanity will be threatened for thousands of years” if the Fukushima Unit 4 pool can’t be kept cool. Your worries about eating cesium-contaminated fish from the Pacific Ocean are grounded in fact, but this is a world-wide disaster of the most epic proportions just waiting to happen. If nothing else, it points to the necessity of nuclear-free power to fuel the planet, but in the meantime, more than 1,535 fuel rods must be meticulously removed from Unit 4, which in all likelihood is crumbling.

Charles Perrow, Professor Emeritus of Sociology from Yale University cautions:

“Conditions in the unit 4 pool, 100 feet from the ground, are perilous, and if any two of the rods touch it could cause a nuclear reaction that would be uncontrollable. The radiation emitted from all these rods, if they are not continually cool and kept separate, would require the evacuation of surrounding areas including Tokyo. Because of the radiation at the site the 6,375 rods in the common storage pool could not be continuously cooled; they would fission and all of humanity will be threatened, for thousands of years. [...]”

.In early stages of the Fukushima disaster Tepco, under influence of the Nuclear and Industiral Safety Agency (NISA), tried to keep the full ramifications of Fukushima under wraps, and now the entire country faces a possible trillion dollar price tag and multiple decades of active clean up to make this go away, but that will all be a moot point if the fuel rods aren’t removed properly.

Japan to pay $3.1bn to remove US troops from Okinawa, will host spy drones

Published time: October 03, 2013 15:15

Tokyo is to foot a $3.1 billion bill, which is part of the cost for relocating American troops from Okinawa. For the first time, it will also host US long-range surveillance drones, which would help to monitor disputed islands in the East China Sea.

The cost-sharing agreement for the troop transfer and the future deployment of drones by next spring are both part of an effort aimed at updating the US-Japan military and diplomatic alliance.

The pledge to modernize the alliance for the first time in 16 years was made in a joint declaration during the visit of US Secretary of State John Kerry and US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, who met their Japanese counterparts, Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida and Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera.

Japan hosts some 50,000 American soldiers and officers, particularly in Okinawa. Their presence is a constant source of tension with local populations due to crimes committed by the servicemen, disruptions caused by military flights and land use by the US military.

Last year the countries announced a plan to relocate about 9,000 US Marines from Okinawa to other locations. 5,000 of them will go to Guam while others will be stationed elsewhere. The estimated cost of the relocation is about $8.6 billion.

Another day, another leak: One more Fukushima cooling tank pollutes Pacific

Published time: October 03, 2013 10:43

Another cooling tank has sprung a leak at Japan’s troubled Fukushima nuclear power plant. As in previous instances, the highly radioactive water is thought to be seeping directly into the Pacific Ocean. This is the second such incident in two months.

Although the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) has promised more accountability following a series of blunders in recent months, it has become clear to Japan’s government that the plant operator simply cannot deal with the problem on its own, forcing them to step in last month and start contributing funds.

The newest leak amounts to about 430 liters of radioactive water spilling in a period of 12 hours. That water contained 200,000 becquerels per liter of Strontium 90 and other harmful beta-emitting isotopes. That is tens of thousands of times more than the legal 30-becquerel limit.

While the plant operator has been pumping hundreds of tons of water a day over the damaged reactors to cool them in the aftermath of the 2011 meltdowns, it also relied on makeshift water tanks above ground to store excessive radioactive water.

Ex-NSA/CIA chief Hayden jokes of putting Snowden on kill list

Published time: October 03, 2013 14:45

When it comes to Edward Snowden, it's reasonable to expect a little hard talk from former NSA and CIA chief Michael Hayden. After all, it is HIS baby that’s been shamed by Snowden’s leaks.

But hinting that there are ‘lists’ on which Snowden should be is taking things to a new level.

Speaking at a panel discussion on Thursday, the ex-NSA director made it clear that he’s aware of Snowden's nomination for a European Human Rights Award.

But Hayden revealed that he’d rather see the NSA whistleblower on a kill list than a short-list:

"I must admit in my darker moments over the past several months, I'd also thought of nominating Mr. Snowden, but it was for a different list," Hayden said during a cybersecurity panel hosted by the Washington Post.

As the audience laughed, US lawmaker Rep. Mike Rogers, chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, offered Hayden his support: "I can help you with that," he said

can the tepco be penalised for radioactive material leakages as the BP for the oil spills?

if this goes out of control the fishing close to that area should be banned

This point, I believe, was raised soon after the incident by few groups but because of the large scale destruction and casualties the thought must have dropped...may be!

1.Radioactive Bluefin Tuna Caught Off California Coast

24.08.2013

Every bluefin tuna tested in the waters off California has shown to be contaminated with radiation that originated in Fukushima. Every single one.

Over a year ago, in May of 2012, the Wall Street Journal reported on a Stanford University study. Daniel Madigan, a marine ecologist who led the study, was quoted as saying, “The tuna packaged it up (the radiation) and brought it across the world’s largest ocean. We were definitely surprised to see it at all and even more surprised to see it in every one we measured.”

Another member of the study group, Marine biologist Nicholas Fisher at Stony Brook University in New York State reported, “We found that absolutely every one of them had comparable concentrations of cesium 134 and cesium 137.”

That was over a year ago. The fish that were tested had relatively little exposure to the radioactive waste being dumped into the ocean following the nuclear melt-through that occurred at the Fukushima Daiichi plant in March of 2011. Since that time, the flow of radioactive contaminants dumping into the ocean has continued unabated. Fish arriving at this juncture have been swimming in contaminants for all of their lives.

Radioactive cesium doesn’t sink to the sea floor, so fish swim through it and ingest it through their gills or by eating organisms that have already ingested it. It is a compound that does occur naturally in nature, however, the levels of cesium found in the tuna in 2012 had levels 3 percent higher than is usual. Measurements for this year haven’t been made available, or at least none that I have been able to find. I went looking for the effects of ingesting cesium. This is what I found:

2.Fast-food chain to start growing produce near Fukushima’s contaminated zone

The company is partnering with farmers just 60 miles away from the crippled reactors

By Lindsay Abrams

A Japanese fast-food chain is partnering with local farmers to grow produce for distribution throughout the country. The trouble is, those farmers are local to Fukushima, the site of the 2011 nuclear disaster.

Over 160,000 residents were evacuated from the area surrounding Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi Power Plant when three of its nuclear reactors experienced core meltdown, releasing unknown amounts of radiation into the land, sea and air. The government made the 20 kilometers immediately surrounding the plant a mandatory evacuation zone, up to 30 miles radius was considered voluntary, and additional areas were cleared depending on wind direction. Many people have yet to return.
