Hi Hemen,
Thanks for your great work on getbhavcopy. I have been able to download NSE daily data from 15-12-08 till date [in Metastock format] and the same is viewing fine in Metastock 10 with the same start and end data dates. Can you help me now on how to bring in the historical data upto 13-12-08 into Metastock ? Do I just unzip the hist-file to the Metstock NSE directory - I did this but I still see only the current data, not the historical data. What am I doing wrong?

Could you tell me how do you get the volume figure for the indices? For eg. todays volume for Nifty shows 285,340,638 what is this?

@ Xaero: Looks like you have been able to download Getbhavcopy. This is based on your latest question about the volume.

Any way the direct link is Getbhavcopy download.


As for your latest question, about the volume of Nifty i.e what is 285340638 then it is the total number of shares traded.

Check the attached image to ensure that the figure is exact for 11 may.

My stress is to provide the most accurate data as far as possible. Getbhavcopy calculates that value and you can see it is accurate.

Hi Sundeep,

Looks like you are not doing things right. As you said i know you have downloaded the NSE historical data till dec 13 2008 in Metastock format from my site.

• First extract that data in the directory C:\Metastock\NSE
• Now start Metastock in offile mode and select file open and browse to C:\Metastock\NSE
• Here wou will see all the files and the hsitorical data too (from the file you downloaded from my site).

Now since the historical data is all set you need to update the Metastock NSE database (stored in C:\Metastock\NSE) with the EOD data you download daily using Getbhavcopy.


To do that follow the documentation at Importing Getbhavcopy data to Metastock.

Ensure you set the destination to C:\Metastock\NSE as that is the Metastock NSE database location in your system.

Yes Hemen ! I finally got the confirmation link and download getbhavcopy and it is working fine. Except a few gliches where one or two days of data was not downloaded. I think that might be because of network issues. Will let you know if I have the problem again.

I have also downloaded and adjusted some companies for splits that were missed out and also the new ones, fixed the volume issue and renamed old tickers to new ones so removed some duplicates and also fixed the prices of PNB for which I had posted the image. I got the database from your ASCII files. I have the database updated till yesterday.

Would you like to have this one uploaded to your site? I done quite a few fixes. (few more left). Let me know.

Thanks to you I am able to access great charts everyday.

Can I bother you with a couple of small problems as follows which arose following conversion of getbhavcopy into Metastock:

1. BSE - There are a few scrips which appear in Metastock data directory [BSE folder] without names [pl see attached screenshot 'bse']. Is there any way to add in the names for them?
2. NSE - some sub-directories have got created in the Metastock data directory [NSE folder] with alphabet letters, e.g. A, B, C etc. [pl see attached screenshot 'NSE']. When I scrutinise their contents I find that these are mostly BSE data - e.g. 'B' has scrips lile bankex etc. I suspect these are perhaps due to wrong posting of BSE data to NSE while conversion, but I am not sure. Can I go ahead and delete these sub-dirs?

Otherwise everything is working like a dream.

@Xaero : It is good to see that you have updated the data for the latest Splits and Bonus releases as well as company name changes and NSE index volume issue. You can upload the data to "4s ha red.com". I can take a look and then if the data is fine i will update the links on my site.

For BSE scripts without names you can open the scripts in Downloader and edit the names manually, however this is a cumbersome process to best is to create a file with the header
<ticker>,<name>

and then add the tickers and names in the two columns and import it using downloader. I have never tried it but should work.

As for the NSE sub directories, neither Getbhavcopy nor Metastock should create those. Looks like you are trying to play with multiple Technical Analysis softwares and are creating the database in the same location.

It looks like some ticker had imported data from other than EQ/BE that's why it looks that way on PNB. I have noticed the same issue with some other stocks. I am redownloading and importing data. Once I feel I have most of them I will upload it and let you know.

Hi Hemen,

After scanning through many tickers I have noticed that many tickers have N1/N2 quotes imported and also there are some old tickers that need to be renamed and some tickers splits and bonuses are not correctly calcuated. Fixing so many symbols would be time consuming and since they occour more than 2-3yrs in the past I've decided to ignore it since old data doesn't affect indicators and when manually checking if required the data can be redownloaded as and when we come across such tickers that pose a problem to effective technical analysis.
