Fund house is better. Plus they have option of entering all types of asset class like Debt, gold and even Thematic ( Sectoral ) MF.
Also, they can target Large Cap, MC, SC etc. Even international funds are now available.
Specific ETFs may not be available and one can check but same or similar MF instrument is definitely there.

By MF route you can achieve everything, its only that you don't have finer control. Pay a small fee called "expense ratio" and leave the management to fund house.
What I personally do :

1) After studying Fundamentals and Management and Debtfree status , I have selected only 2 stocks from each sector Largecap, Midcap , Smallcap. Technology and Banking.
2) Every month, I buy only 2 to 5 qty only in each selected stocks. This process is going on from last 20 years !
3) I get benefit of averaging and market corrections !
4) Exclude any stock which is not giving min 10% Annual Returns and in place inclusde another good quality scrip !

I am mostly a satisfied investor !

Consult your FA and study yourself , before applying this strategy !
View strictly for STUDY PURPOSE !
