Way back in 2007,here were a comparison of the offerings.Maybe brokerage has changed but the other charges I suspect are more or less the same.

Prosperity handlers

TEMPTED to hand over your savings to a PMS?
Most players offer a suite of "model" portfolios or "concepts" for investors to choose from. Here's a walk-through of what some players have to offer.

Birla Sun Life accepts minimum investments of Rs 50 lakh for its PMS, which focuses on equities. The three specialised variants it offers are a value plus growth portfolio, an emerging opportunities portfolio and a high dividend yield portfolio. Ticket sizes of over Rs 2.5 crore will fetch you a customised portfolio, after a detailed risk profiling exercise. Management fees are performance-linked.
PruICICI accepts Rs 25 lakh as the minimum investment for the Asset Shield portfolio, which mixes equity and debt for capital preservation. The minimum investment is at Rs 50 lakh for pure equity products such as the deep value portfolio and the dividend yield portfolio. The menu also includes a couple of products exclusively dedicated to options and arbitrage opportunities in stock futures. You can choose between a fixed fee of 2.5 per cent and a variable fee with a fixed component of 1.25 per cent and profit sharing on returns of over 15 per cent.

Way2Wealth accepts investments of Rs 25 lakh and above. For a conservative portfolio (less than 40 per cent in equity), the fixed fee is at 1.5 per cent; but reduces with ticket size. The balanced (up to 65 per cent in equity), growth and aggressive growth portfolios carry a flat fee of 0.5 per cent and performance fee of 20 per cent on returns earned over a threshold of 8 per cent.

Kotak Securities focuses on equity investments. Its menu of model portfolios include Sigma Equity (65 per cent large-caps, 35 per cent mid-caps), Smart Investor (emerging businesses) and Opportunities 2005, which is a thematic portfolio. Both fixed and performance-linked fee options are available.

ASK Raymond James (now called ASK Wealth advisors) too focuses on equity investments. It markets four basic concepts under its PMS: Growth, Eagle (emerging businesses), Kingfisher (an actively managed portfolio) and Dividend Yield. Both a fixed and variable fee option is available.

The Web sites provide you contact details of these portfolio managers. But for further information, you will have to get in touch with the player concerned.

as of 2005.

Kotak Mutual offers about 5 to 6 products under its PMS division of which the Fortune portfolio has generated an annual return of above 60 per cent.

Fortis Securities which runs three schemes, zoologically named Tortoise, Panther and Hawk generated more than 100 per cent returns on an average says Kunj B Bansal, CIO, PMS in Fortis, who was a fund manager with Reliance Mutual.

Birla Mutual which has a dedicated set of analysts and fund managers for its PMS division has three different products which have posted about 60 per cent annualised return.

PMS schemes are are meant for HNIS, who dont mind playing the high risk game, but MFs cannot afford to take big exposure to companies with lower market cap.

Apart from market risks which all MFs are subject to, there is concentration

It appears from your post that you want to use the services of a PMS because you don't have the time to devote for trading yourself. In my experience, when you go for a PMS the portfolio manager may try to increase the trading volumes to increase his commission/charges rather than concentrating on your returns. This increases the risk. Further, if the risks are as high as trading yourself, then as somebody said on this forum, if at all you happen to loose your money, it is better to loose it yourself rather than loosing it through someone else.

If I was in your place, I would rather subscribe to some good research group (don't go for blind TIPS) and place orders on the phone (if I can't trade online) as and when needed.

I don't want to publicise or advertise for any particular person/research group on this forum as it may be against the forum rules, but after having traded for almost 5 years now, I have been able to make some decent returns following one of them. You can contact me offline at my email v m a n o c h a @ g m a i l . c o m if you need to get some details regarding that.
