2-1-2008 17:15 World cotton output 26.9 mln T in 2008/09 - ICAC

WASHINGTON, Feb 1 (Reuters) - World cotton production will
rise to 26.9 million tonnes in 2008/09 due to an increase in
yield, but output will fail to keep pace with rising
consumption, an international farm group said on Friday.
The International Cotton Advisory Committee secretariat
said in a monthly report that cotton demand will rise 1 percent
to 27.4 million tonnes in 2008/09. As demand outstrips
production, the ICAC forecast a further reduction in world end
stocks to 10.95 million tonnes.
World cotton area is projected at 33.9 million hectares
(83.8 million acres) in 2008/09. ICAC said cotton area is
projected to decline by 11 percent in the United States.
Increases are expected in China (Mainland), India, African
Franc Zone and Brazil.
