MFs to be bought seperately, or can I also do it thru DeMat?

I read a bit about Mutual Funds today. An American website said that MFs can be bought in shares/equities through a de-mat account! The NAV is also the price per share!
Gold ETFs are certainly buyable through De-mat accounts, even though they are MFs. So can other MFs, say HDFC top 200 also be bought through an account?
If yes, then what happens to their entry and exit loads?

I was thinking of investing in a good mutual fund for a year or two and learn about the market in the meantime (and use the moneybhai game). Then, I would open a de-mat a/c and start trading.
If I can just do as I read today, this won't be needed! Is the idea good?
