SBI demat account with commodity broker

Is it necessary that your demat account should be with the broker itself for commodities? A sharekhan representative said I have to open the demat account with them, else I cannot do any online transactions. He said this will be the case with all the brokers. Is it true?

If true, what do people use SBI demat account for?

Once enquired about this while opening an account with Zerodha.
They said that they can link my "old" PIB demat account but advised me to open a new one with them. They said when I buy from zerodha, the shares will be delivered to the demat, but I cannot sell it from there. I will need to sell it from PIB.
