as long its going to be a Demat Account with NSDL or CDSL. How does it make any difference whether it has been opened THROUGH discount broker or some bank-cum-broker?

Eventually your shares shall be with NSDL or CDSL, how come any broker (like big brands) make any difference ?

becuase, now a days. all brokers ask customer to sign power of attorney... once you sign the POA. broker has full rights for Demat and bank account.
due to this reason most of people suggesting reputed bank for demat service for long term investor.

Technically yes , you can refuse. But most of the brokers would not be interested to open in your account in that case.
ya.. i agree:thumb:. without poa u have to give written authorisation each time u trade, thus whole process of online trading becomes impractical and inconvenient.

When you buy shares, be it in an online or offline account, the shares are automatically transferred to your demat account, you don’t need a POA to do this.
When you sell shares or want to pledge them, that is when the shares are going out of your demat account, this is when the POA is required if it has to be done online.
Traditionally (offline method), you would have to send the delivery instruction slip asking to debit the shares from your demat and send it to the brokers office. Once the slip is received at the broker, he would debit your demat account.

What can an investor do to protect himself? First, sign the PoA only if you really need the facility. If the agent refuses to provide services without it, remind him that he cannot do so on these grounds and that it is a punishable offence source:http://articles.economictimes.india...ews/29761256_1_stock-broker-poa-transaction/2
