With great expectations comes great disappointments.. reminds me of warren buffett's quote, “What's the secret of a great marriage? It's not looks, nor intelligence, nor money — it's low expectations.” – Buffett on the relationship :DD

A simple market value to net profit shows how much money is actually invested in "big brands" for tiny profit.

Facebook shares fall 20% after lower then expectated earnings.

@Einstein What are your views about investing in Holding companies??
There is nothing wrong with such companies, but its really hard to assess the actual value of that holding firm. a company within a company, inception. Even if the underlying assets are correctly priced, holding company's value may differ, I personally value such company based on underlying assets and holdings, VHL is an example, i like it, but cannot get to a solid number.

Well, usually holding company's, specially in India have been trading at a discount historically. VHL, like many, worth lot more than what the market is quoting for it. I remember my finance prof once said that holding company kills value. I too happen to like VHL, have been liking it for sometime now. Their owners live near my neighborhood (Ludhiana) hence the inclination. Coming to a particular range is tough with companies like VHL, specially with a conglomerate having a holding company for its subsidiaries with no intention of selling a stake. VHL, sometimes trades cotton in international markets on behalf of subsidiaries which puts me off.

Go ahead with VHL, go heavy.

@muthutrader Its near to impossible to evaluate the correct value of an index, buffett once said that he can no longer evaluate berkshire hathway simply because its like an index, a portfolio consist of 100s of businesses. so if anyone says he can evaluate an index, just be careful.
