Think everyone that comes to Mumbai for the first time and travels by local train has had their share of experiences with these artful masters of pickpocketing. I have had my wallet picked 2-3 times on harbour line. After the first time, I simply started to keep my actual wallet in my laptop bag and another wallet with a few notes in my trousers. One time in Kurla station I even managed to grab a guy's hand who was pulling my wallet out. But the crowd getting in and out of those trains is a like tsunami. I had no chance to even move. The guy managed to wriggled his hand out.

They must have found a way to identify newcomers in Mumbai :)

I know people who keep an old empty wallet in their backpocket with only a piece of paper in it written "Buri nazar waale tera muh kaala".

I think there was a movie too. Not sure whether people got the idea from the movie or other way around.
