Indian politicians are currently leading a campaign to boycott Chinese goods. But an IndiaSpend analysis shows why this will fail: China is India’s largest trade partner, a sixth of India’s imports are Chinese, up from a tenth in 2011-12, while India’s exports to its rival have halved over the same period.

Imports from China grew at 20% over two years and 5% over five years, to $61 billion. These goods range from power plants and set top boxes to Ganesh idols. This is despite the fact that India’s imports have generally fallen over the last five years — from $490 billion (Rs 23 lakh crore) to $380 billion (Rs 25 lakh crore)—because of a fall in global oil prices.
India’s exports to China have fallen from $18 billion (Rs 86,000 crore) in 2011-12 to $9 billion (Rs 58,000 crore) in 2015-16. Apart from cotton, copper, petroleum and industrial machinery, India does not export much to China. This means that India buys six times the merchandise it sells to China.
The Export-Import Imbalance
Cellphones, laptops, solar cells, fertilisers, keyboards, displays and communication equipment — including earphones — these are India’s chief imports from China, according to our analysis of ministry of commerce data.
Other major imports from China include tuberculosis and leprosy drugs, antibiotics, children’s toys, industrial springs, ball bearings, LCD and LED displays, routers, TV remote controllers and set top boxes.
The political storm
Despite this, political leaders including Sharad Yadav of Janata Dal (United) from Bihar, Himanta Biswa Sarma, the newly inducted finance minister of Assam, and Anil Vij, health minister of Haryana, are appealing for a boycott of ‘Made In China’ goods.
“People should not buy Chinese goods. Instead, Indian goods should be used. Trade with China is affecting our country. China is not our friend nation. China can buy weapons with whatever money it earns. There is a possibility that the weapons are given to enemy countries…We should focus on Make in India,” Vij was quoted by Indian Express on October 4, 2016.

China was referred to as the ‘world’s manufacturing powerhouse’ by former Reserve Bank of India governor Raghuram Rajan and chief economic advisor Arvind Subramanian in a February 2006 research paper. India, however, “failed to match its neighbor in this process”, asserted the paper, published by the US-based National Bureau of Economic Research.
Stagnating indices for the manufacturing sector show that India is still struggling to compete with China. Despite a record foreign direct investment of $55 billion in 2015-16, private investment in manufacturing is still sluggish.
Why China bazars are popular
IndiaSpend visited Manish market, the hub of imported Chinese goods in Mumbai’s heart. Chinese products here are cheaper, available in bulk, neatly packaged and easy to buy.
“If the 50 different types of LED lamps that I sell were available from say, Surat, at a cheaper rate and at my doorstep, why would I go for Chinese lamps?” asked a lamp distributor and retailer, requesting anonymity. “If I had to buy these in India, this collection would cost me double.”
China moved forward with rapid market reforms from the 1980s, propelled by the establishment of special economic zones. Land and labour reforms helped it ramp up its production capacity. The result is that India’s iron, steel and fertiliser production is a tenth of China’s.

China’s export story is also driven by ease of market access. Take the example of Sumant Kasliwal, who runs an apparel e-commerce start-up in Mumbai. After two years of shopping for merchandise in India, he switched to China two years ago. His sales have tripled since.
Market access is easier in China
Customers rarely have to waste time in China searching for markets and products, said Kasliwal. It took him less than a week to buy a three-month consignment that ranged from jewelry to fabric.
“Even small market-towns like Yiwu — comparable to Varanasi in terms of population — have a one-stop, dedicated market for all consumer durables, from fashion to home accessories, with cost and quality options,” he said. “In India, it would take us weeks.”

Problem is that previous surgical strikes were not marketed like this one. So people are in a hazy situation of self satisfaction, feeling completely victorious, flag bearers for the countrymen , as this sole strike is being served to them as a victory in the history of India not achieved by anyone going as far as 2000 to 3000 years back..
Mr. Manmohan Singh when told to the opposition that strong message will be sent, whole of NDA cried for war and only war with rampant chest beating , but now , after watching media it seems that India has usurped Pakistan with the single strike.
The satisfaction of self serving ego is highly detrimental.

Definitely can be done in countless ways if the government really have the concern.
I am aware of Chinese goods cannot be ban directly coz of liberalization agreements. Criminal minds are very skilled they find every holes in the laws , but only the problem is, their Brain will work for their own sake not for country or common cause. You may aware Defamation suits which used carelessly to shut the mouths in my state. Even the court condemn the government , the same day 2 cased filed :lol: . And in national level anti-national cases .
In my experience I tried to buy a special type motor which is not manufactured in India. Price of the chinnese and european are more or less the same, with further enquiry Chinnese told you could get 1/10 of the price if I purchase one full container . Here is the point so the cheap electronics goods are bought in containers to get full offer. If the government use all their force , IT ,customs and target few of those buyers. Sue them fake case and lengthen the case for few years. This is one idea. If the criminal minds focus this they may get thousands of ideas. :lol:
If the maggie can be banned for few months , why not chinnese goods, Its very easy to find fault in every chinnese goods and routinely ban for some periods till the lab test finds allegation is not true.
Few Indian companies outsourcing the production process to china, Target those companies if any workers-union problem arise, indirectly support the union and scare the company managements. (This is usually happening to get bribes in crores.)
China may shout Indian government illeagally/indirectly banning their products, We should answer like Paki PMs "Give the evidence, we take action". If they give evidence again like paki PMs "There is no enough evidence to take action" . :lol: Am i getting crazy :rofl:

No surgical strike during UPA government according to former DGMO and our defence minister manohar parrikar....
We never carried out surgical strikes earlier: former DGMO Lt. Gen. Vinod Bhatia :-
NEW DELHI: Former DGMO Lt. Gen. Vinod Bhatia on Thursday asserted that surgical strikes were never carried out during the erstwhile UPA regime and last week's surgical strikes carried out by the army across the LoC were the first of its kind.
"We never carried out such strikes earlier. They were not strikes, but actions carried out at very very local level. When you are firefighting you may go across the LoC a few meters, but then you cannot call them cross border strikes," Bhatia, who was the Director General of Military Operations from 2012 to 2014, told DD News.
Bhatia's comments come in the wake of Congress claiming that at least three surgical strikes were carried out between 2011 and 2014 under the party-led United United Progressive Alliance regime.
"In the past our forces have successfully conducted such surgical strikes on numerous occasions, particularly on September 1, 2011, July 28, 2013 and January 14, 2014, giving a befitting reply to the enemy," Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala had said on Tuesday.
Congress leader and former Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram too had recently claimed that surgical strikes were carried out in 2013 during the UPA regime.
Bhatia said the September 29 early morning surgical strikes on terrorist launch pads across the LoC were "perfect", and displayed India's strong political will.
"The current strikes are a class apart, they are perfect. They are a well thought out action done at a national level, with strategic and tactical planning. ..
"They have yielded the desired results and more importantly, they have displayed India's strategic resolve and strong political will.
"This operation has displayed that India has a strategic resolve to safeguard its national interests in counter-terrorist domain," he said.
Expressing anguish over demands for proof of the military action, Bhatia said special military operations are never publicised.
"Give the credit that is due to the Indian army. There have been questions on whether the (current) DGMO's (Lt. Gen. Ranbir Singh) claims of the strikes are correct or not. Please do not question the DGMO or hurt the Army. By doing this you are degrading your own army," said Bhatia.
"No army in the world ever publicises or propagates its tactics or the way it carried out operations, especially covert operations. No one should ask for evidence; that means you are doubting the credibility of your own army and the nation also.
"Special operations are never publicised, no army, no nation ever does that," added Gen. Bhatia.
A section of politicians have been demanding for release of videos of the surgical strikes to expose Pakistan's "false propaganda" on the cross border action by the Indian army.

Rejecting Congress’s claim of conducting surgical strikes across LoC during the UPA rule, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar on Wednesday said that there was no such Army operation in his knowledge. “I’m Defence Minister for two years, and from whatever I have learnt, there’s no surgical strike anytime earlier. What probably they are quoting are what is called as action taken by Border Action Teams.” He was speaking at an event hosted by Forum for Integrated National Security in Mumbai.
Parrikar further said that ‘these (action by Border Action Teams) are common practices across the globe and also in Indian Army. A local commander takes punitive action against an opponent who has been troubling him to settle scores. It’s not an official action approved by the government and that’s why it is called covert operation, without the knowledge of anyone. The report is subsequently issued,” he said.
Speaking about the September 29 surgical strike, the Defence minister said: “In this case a decision was taken and conveyed. Of course the execution was done superbly by the army they have done their job properly but there was a decision and which was announced by army itself – DGMO. If we had to take political credit for it, Defence Minister would have announced it. We have not announced it. It is Indian Armed Forces DGMO who announced the outcome and informed of the action taken by Indian military. The difference is that this is a covert operation which clearly indicates the intent of the Indian Army which was carried out.”
The minister gave whole credit of the surgical strikes to Indian Army and the people of India. “We don’t take credit for the strike. One should understand government takes decision and that government should be cheered. 127 crores people of this country and the Indian armed forces deserve the credit for the surgical strikes, said Parrikar.
He also said that India’s extending hand of friendship was construed as weakness by Pakistan. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi tried to patch up with Pakistanis. He extended a hand of friendship to Pakistan but this was construed as weakness. What we did on September 29 was the tell our adversaries that we are not weak.
On being asked about the alleged misuse of AFSPA in Valley, Parrikar said, “AFSPA has not been misused during our regime. In cases were there has been some error in judgements, inquires are underway and action would be taken accordingly. We have given clear instructions-don’t touch civilians but when somebody comes with a gun then don’t treat him as a civilian.”
On the intervening night of September 28 and 29, the Army conducted surgical strikes across the LoC to eliminate terrorists waiting at launchpads, ready to infiltrate the country and carry out attacks. The announcement was made by DGMO Lt Gen Ranbir Singh at a joint press conference with the Ministry of External Affairs on the following day.
The surgical strikes were carried out in retaliation to the Uri terror attack that claimed the lives of 20 Indian soldiers.
