I, as of just now, have not clearly decided at the moment between LMDE or Ubuntu, but one of those it will be.
When you feel like it, just boot from livecds of different distros ( which will not effect your harddisk ) and just use whatver you like - say Linux Mint/Ubuntu/LMDE/OpenSuse/Suse Tumbleweed/CrunchBang. Open Suse with Kde should be a good alternative to Ubuntu Unity / Linux Mint. It supposedly has the best KDE integration.

Eventually what matters is which distro you like best ( package management - updates/installs, user support, no of software etc etc ). Defaults are just defaults - you can use kde with ubuntu (kubuntu) too. Experiment between KDE/Gnome/Lxde/Xfce/openbox .....

good luck ...

@TracerBullet

Ok, super. After reading all what you have kindly and with great effort posted, I feel enough confident to when ever time permits to do my first baby steps with a Linux OS. I, as of just now, have not clearly decided at the moment between LMDE or Ubuntu, but one of those it will be.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR GREAT AND GENEROUS HELP. :thumb::clapping:

@Aman.sharma0091

My thanks of course also goes to you and your help. THANKS :thumb::clapping:

Dan,

If you are confused about which LINUX OS to use, head to Distrowatch.com -> on bottom right you see a list of top linux distros, you can read all about it on the website.

If you have bandwidth, please download :
linux mint;
Ubuntu;
Puppy
and other OS you short list.

Use UNETBOOTIN software to install these .iso image to a USB drive.

Next, reboot your computer and boot from USB. That particular linux OS will run (it will not install), play around the look and feel of that linux distro and check like this all of them that you have downloaded.

If you like a particular OS, install the same ALONGWITH windows (this option is given, when you select Install). so, when you boot, system will ask which os to load - windows or linux.

Have good experience with linux and i like it (personally puppy fan); the only problem is my trading software will not run on linux.

all the best.

@Comm4300

THANKS for your help. Will also consider what you have posted. :thumb::clapping: Those few post which now have been made would even make sense to open a new thread about how to start with Linux. I will ask the admin to help with that idea, as I think more people are interested in that topic.

Take care and have a good day / Dan :)

Those who want to safely experiment/try linux do this:

Method 1:
-get an EMPTY pen drive. 64gb or larger, bare minimum 8gb. This pen drive needs be formatted by below tools.
-download YUMI – Multiboot USB Creator or UNetbootin (as suggested by Comm4300) or any other Multiboot USB Creator.
-start the downloaded Multiboot USB Creator. Follow simple steps to prepare the pen drive for multiboot. This pen drive will be formatted.
-These tools generally provide links to download various linux OS and other tools. Download what you want
-keep adding to your pen drive all the linux OS / tools you want to try.
-reboot and boot from this pen drive.
-choose the OS you want to boot from the menu.
-play with it (but do not install yet) to get an idea how it is.
-typically settings and changes will not be saved.

Method 2:
If you have a EMPTY hard disk you can directly install all these OS and experiment. You can save all settings and changes to disk.

After this experimentation you will get an idea of which OS you want. Then you can install it safely along with your existing Windows. TracerBullet already gave a lot of info on installing safely with backups.

How to run some Windows apps in Linux:

Option 1:
Many Windows apps have an equivalent app in Linux. So no need to use that windows app at all. Browsers, pdf readers, chat, image, video, Office software and many many other types of apps already have a ready made Linux app.

Option 2:
There is something called WINE that helps to run some (not all) Windows applications on Linux, BSD, Solaris and Mac OS X.
See https://appdb.winehq.org/ for which apps run.
WINE is free.

Option 3:
Use commercial "CrossOver Linux" by Codeweavers. "CrossOver can run a wide range of Windows software and games". Not all windows apps will run though. See http://www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/ for which apps run.
"CrossOver Linux" is not free.

Thanks a lot to all the friends for sharing valuable information regarding Linux :thumb:

@Dan, your idea of moving the Linux related posts to a separate thread is really nice. It would be better to have a separate thread focused completely on Linux alone.

Request to moderators - please do it, if possible.

Thanks and regards

Hi

This post is urgent for all users of any Windows system, as there is a new Exploit of Sandworm Zero-Day which could Bypass Official Patch: http://blogs.mcafee.com/mcafee-labs/new-exploit-sandworm-zero-day-bypass-official-patch All OLE https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Object_Linking_and_Embedding from Windows are in danger.

As Microsoft jet has not a patch, you must use the fix tool you find in the link under: Fix it for me https://support.microsoft.com/kb/3010060

Here are some more workarounds which Microsoft recommends: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/security/ms14-060.aspx#ID0EQAAE

Some other problems occurred in the last few days under SSL, so do update all your browsers to the current version. In the IE you have to do it manually. Go to "Tools", choose "Internet Options", choose "Advanced" and here you scroll down and then remove the "ok" in the box from: Use SSL 2.0 and Use SSL 3.0 . Now you must restart your computer.

Further do update all your adobe products you use on your computer https://www.adobe.com

Happy Diwalli and enjoy the festival / Dan :)
