Hi
TA Trader has given really good advice. I will add to this. On your credit card you will see the Card number printed in the reverse side and additional three digit number which is called CVV number( xxxx xxxx xxxx xxxx XXX). this is used to validate any online transaction along with the month and year of validity. Do not give this number to anybody..
I have bought alot online. Most companies nowdays ask fo that 3 digit number to process your purchase. They say it is so they know you have the card in your hand. What do you do about this?

Hi
When you enter three digit cvv number it will be encrypted and sent for validation. So it becomes the responsibility of the company to protect the identity of the customer. But sometimes a fraudulent company posing as genuine online company will trap such numbers and use it for their purpose. Buy only from such a site which has a brick and mortar presence also and visibility is very.Caution is the best advice. If card expenditure is insured then you are peotected against such payments to a large extent. In any case it would be a good practice to keep checking you CC account on regular basis . Do also subscribe to their Alert system wherein CC Company reports all transactions to a given your mobile number by sms.

once irregular transactions are detected report to your CC Company and also lodge police complaint as you would do if cheques/drafts are stolen, unauthorised transactions take place in your account with false signature, your house is subjected to burglary/robbary etc. All are crimes to be reported to respective authorities and pray for recovery!!!!!!!!

Prevention is better then cure.

Hi Vicky

I collected some information from various bank sites such as HDFC, ICICI and CitiBank about credit card usage, security, disputed transactions, frauds, phishing, do's and dont's etc. Some are general tips and some are specific to the bank. May be there are duplication of informations but it is a good insight about credit card usages.

You carry zero liability from the time you report loss of card. Regarding disputed transactions you have to provide evidence and report to the police.Insurance is for outstanding dues in case of death or disability and if you subscribe to that. Written claim is to be made by you or legal heirs.HDFC / CITI banks provide this facility. As for fradulent transactions they provide guidelines as to how to deal with it. That is also quoted below.

Credit card Do's and Dont's

Protect yourself from credit Card fraud by following the simple suggestions given below:

Do's
If you lose your credit card, report the loss immediately.
When you dispose of a card at the time of renewal/upgradation, make sure to cut it diagonally before disposal.

Keep your card in a safe place. Treat it as carefully as you would treat your cash.

Ensure the card is swiped in your presence.

Make sure you conduct any ATM transaction privately.

If your card is swallowed by the ATM, inform the concerned Call Center/Branch personnel immediately.

Before you use an ATM, ensure that there are no strange objects in the insertion panel of the ATM.

Remember to take your Debit/Credit Card back after completing your ATM transaction.

If you spot any suspicious looking people around any ATM, inform the security guard immediately.

Change your ATM PIN once every 3 months.

Make sure that the charge slip is complete before signing.

Feel free to call us on our help line number for any support/assistance 24 hours a day.

Dont's
Do not disclose your Credit Card Number/ATM PIN to anyone.

Do not hand over the card to anyone, even if he/she claims to represent the Bank.

Never get carried away by strangers who try to help you use the ATM machine.

Do not write the ATM PIN on the card or on a paper which you carry along with the card.

Dos and don'ts for online transactions:

Always use HDFC Bank's Net Safe feature for making online transactions. It is safe and secure. If you don't have it already, visit www.hdfcbank.com for details.

Preferably transact on sites which mandate validation of CVC2 value (the last 3 digits after the card number, mentioned on
the signature panel at the back of the card).

Preferably transact on sites which mandate validation of CVC2 value (the last 3 digits after the card number, mentioned on the signature panel at the back of the card).

Be discriminating when providing personal information online. Never give out your personal or account information to anyone you do not trust. And make sure you verify a business's legitimacy by visiting its web site, calling a phone number obtained from a trusted source, and/or checking with a reliable resource.

Keep your passwords secret. Some online stores may require you to register with them via a user name and password before buying. Online passwords should be kept secret from outside parties the same way you protect your ATM PIN.

Look for signs of security. Identify security clues such as a lock image at the bottom of your browser, or a URL that begins with https://. These signs indicate that only you and the merchant can view your payment information.

Never send payment information via email. Information that travels over the Internet (such as email) is not fully protected from being read by outside parties. Most reputable merchant sites use encryption technologies that will protect your private data from being accessed by others as you conduct an online transaction.

Keep a record of your transaction. Just as you save store receipts, you should keep records of your online purchases. Back up your transaction by saving and/or printing the order confirmation.

Review your monthly account statement thoroughly. Immediately investigate suspicious activity to prevent any possible additional fraud before it occurs. Promptly notify your financial institution of any suspicious email activities.

Only open and respond to emails that pass some basic tests, such as:
Is the email from somebody you know?
Have you received emails from this sender before?
Are you expecting email with an attachment from this sender?
Does email from this sender with the contents described in the subject line and the name of the attachment make sense?
Does this email contain a virus?

ICICI Bank

How do I protect my Credit Card against fraud or theft?

These tips are important and universal:

Sign your card- as soon as you receive it!

When you use your card at an ATM, enter your PIN in such a way that no one can easily memorize your keystrokes.

Don't leave your receipt behind at the ATM. Your PIN and account number from a discarded receipt could make you vulnerable to Credit Card fraud. Also, don't throw out your Credit Card statement, receipts or carbons without first shredding them!

Never give your Credit Card number over the telephone unless you initiated the call.

Even when you place the call to a legitimate merchant, never give your Card number out over a cordless phone. One common scam is when someone calls you "back" right after you place an order, claims to be from the merchant and tells you that there was a problem with your Card number -- would you mind giving it to them again? The best thing to do is to ask them to read you the number they have - and then change any incorrect numbers.

Ignore any Credit Card offer that requires you to spend money up-front or fails to disclose the identity of the Card issuer.

Make certain you get your Card back after you make a purchase (one habit to observe is to leave your wallet open in your hand until you have the Card back). Also, make sure that you personally rip up any voided or cancelled sales slips.

Always keep a list of your Credit Cards, Credit Card numbers and toll-free numbers in case your Card is stolen or lost.

Check your monthly statement to make certain all charges are your own, and immediately notify the Card issuer of any errors or unauthorized charges.

What should I do if my Card is lost or damaged?

Immediately inform our ICICI Bank 24-hour Customer Care Centre. They will immediately freeze payments on your current Card and a new Card will be delivered to you within 7 days.

What happens in case of a disputed transaction?

In case of a disputed Card transaction, kindly click here to download the Card member Dispute Form (CDF). After downloading the form, kindly fill up the same and post it to the address indicated in the CDF. We will revert to you at the earliest regarding the status of your transaction.

If you do not recognize a transaction, which appears on your credit card statement, we will give you more details if you ask us. In some cases, we may need you to give us confirmation or evidence that you have not authorized a transaction.

Change your Online Password often

• Leave suspicious sites

• Open e-mails only when you know the sender

• Do not send sensitive personal or financial information unless it is encrypted on a secure website

• Act quickly if you suspect fraud

CITI Bank

What you can do?

General Security

Some of the most effective things you can do to protect yourself are simple to do. Here are some steps you should take:

• Keep your Internet Password (IPIN) confidential.

• Use a secure password, which cannot be easily guessed. Do not use commonly used passwords like your vehicle registration number, birthdays, etc.

• Log off from Citibank Online after you complete your transactions every time. Do not just close your browser.

• Avoid accessing Citibank Online from a public/shared computer.
• Log in regularly to monitor your transactions.

• Never fill an e-mail with input fields that ask you for sensitive data such as User ID, Passwords, PINs, ATM and account number information.

• Look for the padlock symbol on the bottom bar of the browser to ensure that the site is running in secure mode before you enter sensitive information.

• Please bookmark/add to your favourites the following URL to access information and transact on your account with Citibank www.citibank.com/india

Browser Security

Although Internet browsers have built-in security, small Internet files are downloaded to your computer whenever you are online. Some of the files may pose a security risk. Enhance your security by taking some of the following actions:

• Clear your browser's cache and history after each session so that your account information is removed, especially if you are using a shared computer.

• Use an Internet browser that supports 128-bit encryption.

• If you use Internet Explorer, configure the browser to not remember passwords (disable AutoComplete)

To disable the "AutoComplete" function

Launch your Internet Explorer and click on

"Tools">> "Internet Options">> "Content"

Under "Personal Information", click on "AutoComplete".

Uncheck "User names and passwords on forms" and click on

"Clear Passwords".

Click "OK"

Navigate Safely

Navigate the Internet safely to reduce the likelihood of online fraud. Avoid fraudulent websites:

• To ensure that you are going to an authentic Citibank site, type in the entire Citibank website address into your browser instead of clicking on the link directly. For this, you would have to type in "http://www.citibank.com/india" into the browser address field

• Beware of pop-up windows that ask for your account number and PIN (Personal Identification Number). Citibank Login pages are always on a web page and never in a pop-up window

• If you suspect a website is fraudulent, leave the site. Do not follow any of the instructions it may present to you

• Citibank will ask you to fill any account details only on either www.citibank.com/india or any Citibank URL starting with www.online.citibank.co.in

E-mail Security and Phishing

Online Identity Fraud also known as "Phishing" occurs when fraudsters pose as trusted organisations and send out thousands of fraudulent e-mails to random e-mail addresses.

How you can tell the difference between a genuine Citibank e-mail and fraudulent one?

Citigroup frequently communicates with its clients via e-mail. The majority of these communications are to provide you with information and updates about our services. Citibank will never send you an e-mail requesting confidential account information. Delete such e-mail even if they appear to have come from Citibank.

Fraudulent e-mails usually contain a link to a look-alike website to mislead you into entering sensitive financial information such as your account number and Internet Password (Internet Password (IPIN)). This will enable the fraudsters to capture your account information to access the your bank accounts. Citibank will ask you to fill any account details only on eitherwww.citibank.com/india or any Citibank URL starting with www.online.citibank.co.in

If the link from an e-mail goes to a login page or a pop-up window, do not enter your account number and PIN. Always type in the entire website address www.citibank.com/india to access Citibank Online.

Citibank will never send you urgent or time-sensitive e-mails that ask you to provide, update or confirm sensitive data like your Citibank Card number or Internet Password (IPIN), APIN, TPIN or expiration date, etc.

Check the sender e-mail address to verify that it is from a valid e-mail account. Never open e-mail attachments from sources that you cannot trust.

Always scan e-mail attachments for viruses before opening them. If you are unsure about the source of an attachment, delete it.

Be alert for scam e-mails. These are designed to trick you into downloading a virus or jumping to a fraudulent website and disclosing sensitive information.

What you should do in case of e-mail or phishing threats:

If you suspect you have been sent a fraudulent e-mail, contact your local CitiPhone Officer immediately or send a secure mail once you have signed on to Internet Banking.

If you believe someone is trying to commit fraud by pretending to be Citibank or another Citigroup business, please contact us immediately at [email protected].

First thing to do is not to allow the card to be carried away from your sight and check that they are not noting the card numbers or cvv numbers. Second thing is to keep the cvv number in a secure place as it is required for online transaction only and black out the cvv number on your card. Swipe machines dont need it.

Inspite of all precautions if fraud happens then you dispute the transaction and file a police complaint(FIR) and give a copy of it to the bank. That is where constant checking of your statement will help you in finding out immediately the fraudulet transaction and limit losses.
