There are currently only 22 approved TLD's, or top level domains, including .com, .net, and .org. Recently, the Internet Center for Assigned Names and Numbers, or ICANN, approved a plan that could completely change the domain name system. There recent decision would make it possible for Internet address endings to increase significantly beyond the currently approved 22 to an almost unlimited number of TLD's. Essentially, their plan would make it possible for an Internet address ending to be restricted only by the imagination and creativity of the individuals involved. This has led many to consider getting an exclusive TLD for their particular industry or business.
