Big Pharma Using India's Poor as 'Lab Rats' to Test Meds
Multinationals outsource testing, unbeknownst to Indian patients
- Jacob Chamberlain, staff writer

Multinational pharmaceutical companies are treating patients in India like "lab rats," distributing untested drugs for research purposes without the patients' informed consent, Agency France-Presse highlighted on Thursday in a report pulling from personal accounts.

The issue is ongoing and widespread and has been subject to a Supreme Court Case in India — which led Supreme Court judges R.M. Lodha and A.S. Dave to state, "There has to be some sense of responsibility. Human beings are treated like guinea pigs."

Pharmaceutical companies often go to India where the rules are less strict and the testing procedures subsequently far less costly.

"In Europe and the United States the laws are pretty strict. India, on the other hand, makes for a less restrictive destination for drug trials because the regulator lacks teeth," said health campaigner Amulya Nidhi, who works for the Swasthya Adhikaar Manch group, which is fighting on behalf of many of the pharmaceutical trial victims.

As a result, "many desperate and poor people in India are unwittingly taking part in clinical trials for drugs by Indian and multinational pharmaceutical companies that outsource the work to unregulated research organizations," AFP reports.

I was a student at CREMA for some time (did not complete the course as it was way too much for me to handle). CREMA is one of the private coaching institute in Mumbai that makes you a lab-rat handler (Clinical Research Technician) and was horrified at what I saw. There are about 6-7 such institutes in Mumbai and lots of laboratories. I've once gone to a centre in New Mumbai where urban poor are regular donors who donate blood and other body fluids (for some research) against which they are paid small cash (< 500).

I have heard of another institute somewhere near Kalyan that injects hormones to induce pregnancy symptoms and then provides medications (actual drug under test) to qualm those symptoms. They always seek unmarried girls women in 20-25 age brackets to avoid any genuine pregnancy. I have not visited this centre

This is the underbelly of the CNX Pharma (Today's rising Index). Most medicines we've ever consumed is tested in this way.

It scares the living daylights out of me to visit a hospital these days. Especially the corporate hospitals.

The moment you step in you are advised to under go various tests and then refered to other specialists. Added to this, now we find ourselves in middle of a experiment(.....and we pay for that.... what a pity). These hospitals they mint money both ways - from customers and also Pharma companies. From Pharma companies they receive gifts (from samples [to sell], watches, TV to cars) to sell their products (are they Dr. or salesman? [.......Those few honest Dr. have to excuse me if they are reading this....but this is reality]) and now they are also their R&D specialists/agents.....are they on their pay role?

As a kid we were told - education makes man more responsible and respectable and makes life easy. ......??? But where has this modern education led the world to, during the last 150-200 years until now.

A rag picker who harms nobody & tries to live sincerely by earning his own bread is far better than a person who feeds on other people’s blood and knows no kindness, but knows only heartedness.

“..though people may have different status in life,
everybody’s dignity is the same.
I hope from this moment on,
we can start to respect each other.”

– from the movie “Ip Man 2″

Capitalism : its gods way to decide who's smart and who's poor. Poor are people are there with a choice to become rich. They just hide behind excuses. I can show you a thousand stories like these. A servant from my house from years ago collected 10 years worth salary and left to make life. Now he's one of the biggest supplier of motor parts to bihar and jharkhund.
