He worked by day
And toiled by night. He gave up play And some delight. Dry books he read, New things to learn. And forged ahead, Success to earn. He plodded on with Faith and pluck; And when he won, Men called it luck. --Anonymous Regards, nkpanjiyar |

The poem and what Mr Jefferson said is one version of luck. There is another version also.
One has to keep doing Karma. When luck favors you, you may really have a windfall and when luck derserts you you could be in a royal mess. In Jain philosophy this is called Purushartha and Prarabhdh. Mr Bachchan also said in Kaun Banega karodpati " Bhagya me likha hai woh milega par karm karna padega" I have read four bowlers saying," Sometimes we bowl very well and we get no wickets and sometimes we bowl shabbily but have a windfall" I have heard several business people talk like this. It should apply even more in the stock market. The most intelligent trader I have come across(takes positions upto 15000 shares and very good at technicals) has also learnt astrology specially to improve his chances. So luck in the true sense of the term also has some meaning and luck is when preparation and opportunity meet as revealed by the poem is also true. |

![]() There's no end to what can be written or quoted about LUCK & coping with it's vagaries but here's one (card-sharks notwithstanding) based on an old Country 'n Western song; very apt & very relevant to us who dabble in the markets..... The Gambler On a warm summer's evenin', On a train bound for nowhere I met up with the gambler. We were both too tired to sleep. So we took turns a-starin' Out the window at the darkness. When boredom overtook us, He began to speak. He said, Son, I've made my life Out of readin' people's faces. Knowin' what the cards were By the way they held their eyes. So if you don't mind my sayin', I can see you're out of aces, For a taste of your whiskey, I'll give you some advice. So I handed him my bottle, And he drank down my last swallow. Then he bummed a cigarette And asked me for a light. And the night got deathly quiet, And his face lost all expression. He said, If You're gonna play the game, boy, You gotta learn to play it right. You've got to know When to hold 'em, Know when to fold 'em Know when to walk away, Know when to run. You never count your money When you're sittin' at the table. There'll be time enough for countin' When the dealin's done. Now every gambler knows The secret to survivin' Is knowin' what to throw away And knowin' what to keep. 'Cause every hand's a winner And every hand's a loser And the best you can hope for Is to die in your sleep. And when he finished speakin', He turned back toward the window, Crushed out his cigarette And faded off to sleep. And somewhere in the darkness, The gambler he broke even. And in his final words I found An ace that I could keep. You've got to know When to hold 'em, Know when to fold 'em Know when to walk away, Know when to run. You never count your money When you're sittin' at the table. There'll be time enough for countin' When the dealin's done... CHEERS all. ![]() Last edited by jaideep; 4th October 2005 at 07:07 PM. |
