Wonderful poem, Jaideep. This "What to do when" business applies to life in general too rather than make generalizations and making one strategy or individual supreme.

Where pure luck is concerned, " Jab Taqdeer maherbaan, tab gadha pahelwaan" . Recently, the CEO of Infosys admitted in an interview that his success was more a matter of good timing than brightness. He said he knew several people who were brighter and worked far more hard than he did. He almost sounded as if he was embarassed to have a net worth of 3000 crores.

My father in law told me about uneducated peole in Delhi's Sadar BAzaar being multimillionaires. On the other hand one can see educated people struggling to make ends meet. Luck does have a significant role. Many successful people openly admit being lucky and substantiate it with conviction. Some self styled intellectuals are **** bent on proving otherwise.
Many peole admit that their success like the CEO has been because of good timing.

The Gambler

On a warm summer's evenin',
On a train bound for nowhere
I met up with the gambler.
We were both too tired to sleep.
So we took turns a-starin'
Out the window at the darkness.
When boredom overtook us,
He began to speak.

He said, Son, I've made my life
Out of readin' people's faces.
Knowin' what the cards were
By the way they held their eyes.
So if you don't mind my sayin',
I can see you're out of aces,
For a taste of your whiskey,
I'll give you some advice.

So I handed him my bottle,
And he drank down my last swallow.
Then he bummed a cigarette
And asked me for a light.
And the night got deathly quiet,
And his face lost all expression.
He said, If
You're gonna play the game, boy,
You gotta learn to play it right.

You've got to know
When to hold 'em,
Know when to fold 'em
Know when to walk away,
Know when to run.
You never count your money
When you're sittin' at the table.
There'll be time enough for countin'
When the dealin's done.

Now every gambler knows
The secret to survivin'
Is knowin' what to throw away
And knowin' what to keep.
'Cause every hand's a winner
And every hand's a loser
And the best you can hope for
Is to die in your sleep.

And when he finished speakin',
He turned back toward the window,
Crushed out his cigarette
And faded off to sleep.
And somewhere in the darkness,
The gambler he broke even.
And in his final words I found
An ace that I could keep.

You've got to know
When to hold 'em,
Know when to fold 'em
Know when to walk away,
Know when to run.
You never count your money
When you're sittin' at the table.
There'll be time enough for countin'
When the dealin's done...
For those who listen to country music will know that these are the lyrics of Kenny Rogers hit song titled "The Gambler"!

Mr Bachchan also said in Kaun Banega karodpati " Bhagya me likha hai woh milega par karm karna padega"

I have read four bowlers saying," Sometimes we bowl very well and we get no wickets and sometimes we bowl shabbily but have a windfall"

I have heard several business people talk like this. It should apply even more in the stock market. The most intelligent trader I have come across(takes positions upto 15000 shares and very good at technicals) has also learnt astrology specially to improve his chances. So luck in the true sense of the term also has some meaning and luck is when preparation and opportunity meet as revealed by the poem is also true.
Very true sh50. You had put it rightly and aptly. Your objective evaluation and subjective explanations are superb: that makes me to read all your posts again and again. I appreciate your independent views and analysis. Looking forward such more gems from you.

Thanks,
nkpanjiyar

There's no end to what can be written or quoted about LUCK & coping with it's vagaries but here's one (card-sharks notwithstanding) based on an old Country 'n Western song; very apt & very relevant to us who dabble in the markets.....

CHEERS all.
Your timing is fantastic jaideep. Right poem at right time. Thanks.
