Short (trade)= A Trade in which SELL order is placed before a BUY order. (assuming one has open position).
Long (trade) = A Trade in which BUY order is placed before a SELL order.

To make profit from a trade, SELL price always have to be greater then BUY price.

Happy Trading

GentleMen,

I would want to add on to that question!!!

In normal buy if i buy today i can chose to sell the share any other trading day it could be even after a year and so...

but in short do i have to recover the same day of selling or i can buy the short shares any other day just as we do in long

Thanking you

while shorting {selling } in cash segment ,one is required to close the position{buy} in the same day.even if not done manually most brokers place the orders at market price during the last half hour.

in Futures segment one is allowed to hold on to shorted position for more than a day ,generally until expiry

hope this helps
