Kindly read Ashwini as Ashwani wherever I have posted at Traderji. Traderji, please replace by "Replace all" if possible. Sorry. I was not aware that he has a website too- ashwanigujral.com
Mr Ashwani Gujral is a well known commentator on NDTV and CNBC. He has come out with a new book called “How to make money trading derivaties”. It is basically a book on how to use technicals for derivatives and derivative strategies and is by vision books. There are whole chapters on swing and day trading setups, AdX and other major oscillators . There are chapters on cash and futures arbitrage, money management and discipline(psychology). There are chapters on options strategies for normal and special situations with all the option geeks . There is a special chapter on covered calls. I have read only the chapter on day trading so far and there are several good practical tips. Its not everyday that an Indian author comes out with a book. Its easy to relate to because of examples of Indian stocks and other facets of our own stock market. This post is just to create awareness. I will make a detailed commentary later. It seems like a good read Last edited by sh50; 8th February 2005 at 06:13 PM. |

Well I have read the technical analysis part completely. I must have read around 6-7 books on technicals and yet I found several good practical tips in this book on basic charting, money management, psychology and indicators.
The unique thing about this book is that the author shares with us his experiences on a particular trade. Apart from 2-3 such examples, he tells us what and how he analyses after office hours. More knowledgeable people would be better judges but for beginners, it is really good like the Alexamder elder book. It has specific pinpointed examples rather than vague conceptual knowledge found in other books.Since it is by an Indian author, it is easier to relate to. Its a handsome initiative though I wish the author had also covered mechanical systems, volume based indicators, common stock scans and perhaps a software like Metastock |

One serious drawback I must mention is that there are no continuation/reversal patterns. This however is more a book on derivatives than technicals and those patterns can always be learnt from www.stockcharts.com.
Small clarification here- some patterns are covered as parts of chapters on day/swing trading. What I meant was they are not covered the way they are in other books as separate chapters. My apologies. Last edited by sh50; 31st January 2005 at 07:15 PM. |

I am not exactly intelligent in this respect but there is another book by Mayur Shah(called Trading futures and options with Technical Analysis-available with Jain Book Depot) which is also interesting. Different books are better in different respects and you have to choose depending upon what you want. Making that decision does require intelligence.

There is a good book "Introduction to Futures and options" by R.Mahajan. There is no technical analysis in it but it has some nice Indian stock examples.

All, I can say is that there is nothing wrong in selling well as long as the book has substance . Sometimes books by lesser masters have proved more useful to the laymen than the originals. Otherwise, there would not be so many books flooding the market on Microsoft products despite excellent manuals and on-line help provided by Microsoft itself. Some of the books on “So and so subject made simpler” are also hot sellers. I know an Austrailian who takes out newsletters on Metatock
It’s a strange coincidence that a couple of weeks ago in the Times of India, the former managing director of Proctor and Gamble, Mr Gurcharan Das stated that after the Green revolution, many Brahmins were also not averse to taking to agriculture because it had become lucrative though earlier the same people expressed revulsion against tilling the soil because of their higher caste. Doesn’t the media and the marketing guys pull out all tops to sell. Even this forum has advertisements and rightfully so. Ultimately everything has to sell which is why socialism has been a failure. In Technical analysis, we give opinions only after diligently studying the charts/indicators. So I think that views on somebody that one has not even met should entail a certain amount of circumspection. Unfortunately, very few Indians write anyway. Tushar Chande has made a name for himself in Technical analysis and we should all be proud of him. If he has something interesting to offer on Technicals alongwith Derivatives, I am sure everybody would want to know it and shall appreciate if you let us know. Thanks in advance |
