It is a major effort to create particular sector indices. Basically it entails taking the market leaders of that particular sector, and creating a composite.
To have an exact sector index, we also need to apply weightages according to their market capitalisation. That by itself is a major effort, which is carefully maintained by specialised companies. If you go to the BSE or NSE websites, you will know how indices are computed. Dusant. |

you have identified a need. hope some software developers in this forum comes forward to develop a software to generate such sectorial statistics. such indices are not meant for index trading. they are intended to give some indication of the direction of movement of each sector. we have a few downloader Converters developed by members of this forum. they may develop an additional module to calculate such sectorial information. one simple way is to rank the sectors by the average (may not be weighed) gains in the previous day. in the next stage we may have a 'number' associated with each sector which will indicate that sector's relative comparative performance on that day & compared to the previous day. all the necessary basic data is contained in the EOD bhav copy. so data availability may not pose as a problem. any takers?
