How to read OI - Please Help

#1
I am having tradetiger terminal but i don't know how to see OI on my terminal.

Like in the attached pic, how can i know in Nifty Futures, OI is increasing or Decreasing -- Do i need to see %change OR OI Difference OR OI Difference Percentage ?

IF it's in a chart format it can be very easy to see.... hence also tellme what brokers software is providing OI in chart form?

I think OI should be available in indicators like volume is available, just see it is there or not ?

Hi Craige,

The tab % Change is referring to the % change in price of the contract over previous close.

Nifty CE 5100 closed at 216.60 the previous day. The current price is 267.85 Hence the % change in price is 23.66%

OI Difference is ve and so is OI Difference % which refers to the decrease in OI in no. of contracts and % decrease in OI over previous day.

You can go to NSE website and check the contract which should confirm what is indicated on your terminal.

Suggest you move to % Change tab (go to the tab, press shift and drag the % Change tab near the price) This will eliminate the confusion.

Trust this clarifies.

Explanation of OI Increase/Decrease as given by Moneycontrol :

An increase in open interest along with an increase in price mostly indicates long positions being built up, except for very weak stocks where some traders may short the stock on a rally.

An increase in open interest along with a decrease in price mostly indicates short positions being built up, except for very strong stocks where some traders may buy the stock on declines.

Decrease in open interest along with a decrease in price mostly indicates long unwinding.

Decrease in open interest along with an increase in price mostly indicates short covering, except for weak stocks where traders may decide to book profits/cut losses at higher levels. It may also indicate delivery based buying by institutions which pushes up the price and speculators use it to unwind.

Reggie,

What i wana see is a simple chart where i can see OI is increasing or decreasing.

Example like below [Pic taken frm sum other thread here] - I can clearly make out OI is increasing with price so stock is very strong.

similar way how can i see in my terminal as there is no chart system.
As per your above post do i need to keep seeing the "OI diff. percentage" ? Does it have the same info i am looking for and tht is also on the chart above?

As per OI rule:

So what i have to see frm the above 3 parametres tht denotes to the OI.
Ex: What shows 5300CE is getting weak or strong...means which one is OI in my terminal?

Craige,

I don't know of any charting platform that plots price and OI.

You may want to keep in mind that during the last 10 days before expiry, the OI may decrease, but it is actually not right, since the position is closed in the current contract and new position taken in next month. This will distort OI data in any chart.

Furthermore, you cannot consider OI in isolation. What about delivery? OI may actually decrease but price may move up if there is cash buying. Additionally, what about option data.? Institutions may buy options and play around with rollovers, deliveries and easily distort the data.

Have you checked my earlier post to your query on which represents change in OI volume?
