there was thread (last yr around sept) which discussed pretty much same thing. all the greats AMITBE, KARTHIK, SAINT and also AJAY have discussed in detail abt BO (True & False) and what more it has examples with charts. i have the print out, but was unable to locate the link(to post it here). has some really great stuff.
regards
PS ask Karthik maybe he remembers.

trade all breakouts with good volume with very tight stop loss if u r a trend follower and not a swing trader...u never know which one will be a continuous good trend and will never pull back...today hindlever started an explosive move (not a breakout...call it technical pullback, short covering ..whatever)...and never pulled back once for a 12 point rally...only in the fag end did it give up a few points as risk averse ones didnt want to carry it overnight.

From an Elliott Wave perspective, breakouts can happen as third waves of fifth waves.

For third waves - If you see a rally at the end of a bearish phase, followed by a pullback to form a higher bottom, a breakout is most likely if the high is crossed.

For fifth waves - Breakouts typically happen if you see a triangular consolidation (converging set of trendlines) just after a large rally.

Third waves breakouts tend to continue for quite a while. Fifth wave breakouts as mentioned above will get retraced a fast as the breakout occured.

The above was an example in a bull market. For a bear market, just reverse the "up" and "down"

Hope this helps,

Vinod Krishna Bhat.
