It is something like
Suppose you are a student and
X, a bully, stole you book and now saying give me 100 bucks and I will return your book, if you will not pay me then I will tear off pages. And now you have to decide whether your book is worth much more than that or you wont loose anything even if you lost your book. You may complain your Principal about it, but by the time he will take any action, X will destroy your book.
Similarly, ransomware hacks data (by encrypting your data) and ask for a ransom to release it
