Default How is the day's opening price determined for a stock?

As you can see from the question, I am a beginner. I am curious to know why is there a difference between the closing and opening price of a stock. What is causing the difference?

Also the markets are open from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., but who are allowed to trade from 9:55 onwards?

Thanks
