Hi

Here a very useful link for those which have a windows system. They guy explains how to use or to install a compatibility mode in case you have any program which not really works on your new Windows 7 or even Windows 8 system, which was the case for me.

Just follow the instruction and use the compatibility troubleshooter in your system. Follow it step by step and it will help. Just had to do it with two programs where the system changed the basic level to XP Service Pack 3 and now those programs work fine.

Sorry Dan, interrupting.

Vjay, 99% chance that your download of SP3 was corrupt.

But, in general, be ready for a long day. I would follow the main update path of XP from Apr 2008 when SP3 was released. They are listed here under "Windows XP Security updates and patches for 2008/09/10/11". They all begin after SP3 (link on the 2008 page).

The smart thing to do is save the downloads for the future.

Use this link: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=25129 You also can use this download in case you want to make a CD from it for further use or when you make a new installation of the old system. You then not have to down load it again. I any way recommend to use an external hard disk to store such files or to make CDs from all exes you have which are important for your system or personal use. Other wise you always have to download them again in case your system goes broken.

This file was created on the 5 of June 2008. After installing it, your XP system is updated to that date. But that not means that your Framework or Explorer or Media player or other components of the system are updated in case you never did any updates. If this is the case, you now use the link from dear yusi and download from there what ever you need. If you want to have all Windows XP Security updates and patches from that day on, then you download the year 2008, 9, 10 and 2011. After installing, restart your computer.

Bad news on that front; most will be needed; but first solve your SP3 issue.

You could skip those related to programs you do not use. For example, if you do not use .Net 1 or 2, or Media Player, you could skip those related to them. However, it is not always obvious: for example Odin uses the telnet services. Most of the Microsoft updates are security related; which is what this thread is all about. Yes, it is a long and painful process of download and install.

Best if you can find somebody in your city who has these files; a computer maintenance shop perhaps.

A lot depends on your download speed. If you have a very high speed connection, the downloads are done quickly. More time you will use for the installation. So plan the downloads during nights or when ever you do work on your computer and make the installations over the weekend or when you not need to work on that specific computer or laptop.
