Cotton lint surges in north India
21 Jun 2008 3:26 pm

Abohar - Spot cotton lint continued to surge higher by Rs five-Rs 10/maund at major markets across north India Saturday. Prices went up further looking at the bullish trend in other parts of the country and stronger sentiments among ginners, who are buoyant over consistent demand from millers. Ginners are willing to sell remaining limited stock at higher prices.

Traders say, the reducing stocks and surge in yarn prices may keep cotton lint prices up in spot markets. They say, unsold stock of cotton lint across the country is of 13 lakh-14 lakh bales.

Across Punjab, cotton lint traded at Rs 2,780/maund at Fazilka, Kotakpura, Muktasar and Bathinda; Rs 2,755/maund at Malot and Gidarbha; Rs 2,755/maund at Abohar; Rs 2,750/maund at Manasa; and at Rs 2,790-Rs 2,795/maund at Rampura, Barnala and Budhaldha.

Cotton lint traded at Rs 2,660-Rs 2,699/maund in Haryana and at Rs 2,580-Rs 2,620/maund in Rajasthan.

karachi. 22 2008): Phutti price has touched a record high of Rs 2100 per 40 kilograms, market sources said Saturday. Chairman, Cotton Broker Forum Naseem Usman said that Phutti was selling at Rs 1600 to 1700 per 40 kg in the last season, but the new crop was selling at Rs 2100 per 40 kg, the highest ever in country's history.

He pointed out that both domestic and international cotton prices are high and this is the reason for the unprecedented hike in phutti price. Usman said small quantity of phutti has started arriving from lower parts of Sindh including Digri, Jhuddo and Naukot and Sahiwal, Pakpattan, Arifwala and Mian Chunno in Punj

Cotton sown on 20 percent less of target area: Agriculture-expert
RECORDER REPORT
MULTAN (June 22 2008): Agriculture expert, Bahadur Ali Shah has said that cotton crops has been sown on 20 percent less of the target area fixed this year for cultivation of the crops. However, farmers are trying to sow cotton crops reaching nearly end of the season.

It is obvious that the cultivated area will be less due to popularity of the rice price hike in this season, he observed. Shah said that businessmen dealing in rice business are expecting a high price for the coming rice crops in 2008.

The only hindrance in cultivation of rice is shortage of irrigation water, which is compelling farmer's community to sow cotton crops in the remaining area. Otherwise, the present scenario of cotton crops demands to replace the cultivation with some other beneficial crops.

Further, the expert said that in southern Punjab, the cultivation is delayed and early sown crops are now under attack of White Fly, Mites and Mealy Bug. During recent visits in the fields of Rahim Yar Khan, Bahawalnagar, Bahawalpur and Pakpattan, it is found that the cotton variety BT 121 is affected due to high pest pressure. Moreover, the variety is under maximum pressure of high temperature, Shah added.

'Healthy plants are being dried out suggesting that this variety is not heat resistant' he viewed. The flower shedding is also witnessed more than other varieties of BT nature or other conventional varieties.

Farmers are very much afraid of this situation because, if the current situation prevails then per acre yield would decrease very sharply badly affecting the national targets. Therefore, only rains could help to overcome the crisis and save the crops as well as the farmers, he concluded

15-20 percent decline in cotton sowing area
RIZWAN BHATTI
KARACHI (June 24 2008): Cotton sowing across the country has declined by 15-20 percent mainly due to high costs of inputs, substandard seed, feared pest attack and expected water shortage in time, sources told Business Recorder on Monday.

Cotton sowing is in the final stages both in Sindh and Punjab, and is expected to end by the end of this month. However the sowing would remain less than last year. "For the 2008-09 cotton season, about 3.2 million hectares land was available. However, farmers this years are reluctant to grow cotton mainly due to high cost of inputs and some other reasons", said Ghulam Rabbani, a cotton trader who visited various cotton growing areas.

He said that non-availability of quality cotton seed, pesticides, high cost inputs, shortage of water are the main reasons of decline in the sowing area.

Presently, unregistered and uncertified Bt cotton seed is available in the market, which is affected by mealy bug attack, which the farmers believe would hurt cotton crop, he said.

Reports also show that water for cotton crop might not be available on time. Besides, there have been increases in cost of inputs, including pesticides and DAP.

"Peak and best season for cotton sowing has ended and sowing has completed only on 2.5-2.7 million hectares, against available 3.2 million hectares, depicting a declined of 15-20 percent against last season", Rabbani said.

Sowing in Sindh has reduced by 10-12 percent to 0.62 million hectares against 0.8 million hectares of last season, he said. In Punjab, sowing has been completed on 2-2.02 million hectares against last season's 2.4 million hectares, a decline of 0.4-0.38 million hectares, he added.

Cottonseed prices hit new high at Rs 900 per maund

KARACHI (June 24 2008): Cottonseed prices hit the new high at Rs 900 per maund, this was also first time in the country's history, dealers said on the cotton market on Monday. The Karachi cotton Association (KCA) official spot rate was unchanged at Rs 3800, dealers said.

Market sources said that after the Punjab, initially, the picking operations have started in Sindh and quality is good but before time, it. Can't be predicted about the size of production, they said. Meanwhile phutti price with the increase in arrivals has come down to Rs 2025-2050 from weekend level of Rs 2100.

They said that five trucks of cottonseed sold at the high level for 15 July delivery onward. If the aftermath impact of rains not play havoc with the cotton crop, the production may show positive trend, but adversely, if mealy bug and other farm related diseases hurt the crop, they said.

Present trend in the prices, indicate that the prices may go up further in the near future. During the last one year, prices of all essential items and commodities shot up after the sharp rise in the oil prices in the international markets, why cottonseed should be an exception, they added. Following deals were reported as some 768 bales of cotton from Mirpur Mathelo sold at Rs 3850 and 1778 from Dharki at the same rate, they said.
