Use a good options book and option oracle. Decide based on the results of research.

Some of the experts in this forum have guided me to do the following: (It just might catch your attention too)

1) Learn to track some indicators which would help you judge the market direction. On basis of that data only you can decide your bets. Use software like Aptistock to monitor various indicators.

2) Learn the basics of a) Bull Put Credit Spreads & b) Bear Call Credit Spreads. Once you are aware about how these works download an evaluation software like Option Oracle and do some paper trades to see how good your decisions are.

3) After you are through with both the above steps do few real trades for about 4-6 months and if you feel you are making money consistently start learning advance strategies and apply them when you are comfortable.

Yes this is a long process but then that's how you build your portfolio.
