what logic/ calculations/ indicators explain May NIFTY expiry at 4835 instead of 5000/4950????

There is no logic or calculation involved. Purely sentiments and bull-bear fights.

Today morning, the June Nifty was trading at 20 pt discount to the Nifty May future. That was a good enough indication that markets would more or less close on a negative note. Same thing was observed with State Bank of India May-June future.
That the Nifty closed at 4835 is anybody's guess.

End of the day settlement price is given by the Stock Exchange which is the last traded price of the underlying. In this case, Cash Nifty has closing price of 4835 on 29-May.
The same price is also used to calculate the Mark-to-market profit/loss on futures position.

End of settlement the Nifty Spot close price is also the future close.
