You can square off your position any time before expiry. However, you can only exercise the position on expiry.

hello,
can anyone explain difference between square off and exercise with reference to indian BSE/NSE context? For instance I have 3850 lot Power grid at Strike price 105 @rs. 9 premium. if spot price is 120 rs. AND if I square off what will happen and if I exercise what will be the steps? Do I have to Pay the balance amount in cash to take delivery or directly balance amount come into my a/c. Sorry for the newbie question but am just learning.... |

Dear New2sm,
You have bought a power grid call, strike price of Rs.105 at a premium @ Rs.9. Today closing price of this call is Rs.3.40 that means you are lossing 5.60 x 3850. There is no link of spot price with squaring off of the position. However, if spot price will increase then call price will also increase simultaneously. Excerice option may be availed only when trading is not happening. If the trading volume is there you can square up position as and when you want to close the call either at profit or loss. |

thanks ranj_2k. If Premium for Strike price of 105 ever crosses 9 will I make profit? before 25th oct. what should I do in that case - exercise or square off? I dont want to pay 4 lacs to buy Power grid then sell off. also if PG spot price crosses 105 then I believe my contract will stop trading. but I will make profit only if Spot price crosses 105+9 i.e 114 right? If Spot price crosses 114(spot price == Current Stock Price) before 25 oct. should I square off or exercise. what is the difference if can explain.
Thanks. |
