Should we look for one good fund / the best fund in a category of funds?

At times when I try to select a suitable fund from a category of funds, selection of "the best fund" becomes very difficult due to lots of parameters to consider. (Examples: 1,3,5 year returns, expense ratio, alpha, beta, standard deviation, P/E, fund manager changes, etc.) In fact in certain cases it becomes practically impossible to define one fund as the best fund because there may be two/three funds close to one another in several respects. What should one do in such a case?

I think while looking for consistency of fund performance, the history of active fund manager is also to be considered. Surprisingly, most fund rating websites like valueresearch do not give details of change of fund manager while showing comparison of different funds. This is as important as quoting returns over past years. Can you suggest any website where I can get up-to-date information of fund managers for different funds?
