Since you have just 6k per month to invest, invest in mutual funds using SIP that will reduce uncertainty associated with stocks. Stick to large/multi cap funds. For eg, you can invest 3k per month in HDFC Top 200 (Growth) and another 3k in either DSPBR Top 100 (Growth) or DSPBR Equity fund (Growth).

I would also suggest you to invest for long term (5-10 yrs) and also increase your investments when possible. When you have more than 10k per month, invest in a 3rd fund in mid & small-cap category like for eg., Reliance Growth or IDFC Premier Equity-A.

Good luck!

Thanks yodlee99 & drsubhadip much appreciated advise.

I am not sure what you mean by Value Investing, as again i am ignorant. Can you give me some examples...

Also, I have learned investing in funds from the same MG group is not advisable is there a specific reason for this ?? or its just point of view ?

Yodlee, yes my plan is to double my investments every year on a long term basis as my financial abilities sustain n cherish. You ve stated pick 2 funds, but My assumptions were around picking at least 5 funds so that my portfolio has wide span..... Is the reason you advise to pick 2 funds higher growth on Capital ??

Cost-benefit analysis. I think its an educated choice that too much of diversification won't benefit. As I said before, just 2 funds will be sufficient for 6k per month. When you have more funds, pick the 3rd, 4th upto a max of 5 funds. If you want to know all 5 funds now, I would suggest 2 in large cap (eg HDFC Top 200, Birla SL Frontline Equity A or DSPBR Top 100), 1 multicap (eg. DSPBR Equity), 1 ELSS (eg. HDFC taxsaver) OR a hybrid fund (eg., Reliance Regular savings funds balanced or HDFC Prudence) and 1 in mid/small cap (eg, Reliance growth or IDFC Premier Equity-A).

SIP on different dates of the month and keep increasing your investment amount as and when possible. Spread across fund houses as they tend to follow similar pattern of investing in stocks (even if the fund managers are different) that might make them prone to certain stocks that they hold in common => another diversification factor.
Hope that helps.

Value investing means increase the SIP amount if market corrects.U can keep some amount in debt fund and shift it to equity MF when market corrects. U can find some of the threads discussing value investing (VIP)
