new to metastock

i have bought a book on technical analysis by martin pring along with which a tutorial cd is provided which also contains metastock personal charting software. its written on the cover that the software is worth $49.95. can anybody tell me how useful this software is? also i dont know how to operate this software. first of all i need the nse historical data. also after i tinkered around with it for a while the help files are showing an error and are not opening at all. the error message is :

WINHELP caused a General Protection Fault in module GDI.EXE at 0001:0620.

please help...
