how do i find if i am holding shares ?

this is something someone asked me a few days ago

"i keep getting dividend from a particular company i used to operate in share market during 2000s but canceled my account with broker ,now how do i find if i do have some holding in my name,i might even have bought some shares before there was e-contract notes..how do i find if i am still in possession of those "

If you are receiving dividends from the company confirms that you hold the necessary shares. Write to the registrars of the company giving them the details of dividend received, and state that you require the folio nos. as you have lost the share certificates. If you do not receive a reply within a week, write with a copy of your complaint to SEBI. You will get a response immediately. Have followed the same procedure to get the details last month on the share certificates that I too had misplaced.
