You do not need a demat account for trading commodity futures like gold, silver, crude oil etc. You just need to open a trading account with a commodities broker like Kotak commodities, Angel, RKGlobal etc. which are registered with MCX and NCDEX.

If you are a trader and not a long term investor then you need to buy and sell only the near month contract which is currently 4th december 2010 contract for Silver. The reason being liquidity, which is very low in far month contracts.

For trading silver futures one must choose MCX as it does the most volume of daily turnover in India. This is also the case for Gold and crude oil futures trading in India.

However NCDEX has more volume in agricultural commodities like Gaur seed, potato etc.
