My OS(Win7) was crashing frequently,so I called professional for installation.As installation was taking too long he had opined that it may be due to bad sectors.But on checking,no bad sector was found.Today OS has crashed once again so used restore tool to fix it.

What is probable cause?

There could be many different reasons why it happens starting with updates and malwares going to wrong installation and wrong signals from Antyspyware and so on.

Regarding updates you can try this tool:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/gp/windows-update-issues

Regarding malware you can use any of the following tools:

http://filehippo.com/download_adwcleaner/
http://filehippo.com/software/antimalware/

Just two ways you may want to try, but as it works now, so it is your choice.

If it continues to crash, then best you do a complete new installation by cleaning the HD, format it new and then make a new installation of your OS. You any way should do that once a year. I do it every three month on the main OS I use.

Dan :)

Better is upgrade to 8.1(Enterprise/Professional). It's much more better than 7. Or upgrade to 10 when it's launched, won't be very long.

use a USB (with Linux OS on it);
start and boot from USB;
Use an anti-virus to check for virus on your hard drive.

At least move your data to external hard drive or USB.
then, make a fresh install of OS.

If a hardware problem, and not a HDD issue, it could be anything, maybe RAM, maybe some transistor on the motherboard, even a faulty USB port.

If a software issue,

1) try a different version of win7. I used win7 Ultimate on many different configurations and found it to be very stable.

2) See if it works ok in Safe Mode (try working in Safe Mode with Networking for 4-5 hours). If yes, then certainly a software issue.

Hello,

frequent crash means it's definately a HDD issue, if u didn't find any badsectors means.... it could be MBR(master boot record) problem, try to reallocate MBR...or just try with another HDD,may be ur problem get solved.

Hello,

as u asked regarding MBR... here is one of the method to reallocate/rebuild an MBR pls refer to this site.....
https://www.partition-assistant.com/resource/rebuild-mbr.html

another method is using ur HDD manufacturer's software..like DM(disk manager) for Seagate HDD...etc pls refer the site of HDD manufacturer's

The problem with reallocation of MBR is.... if u perform full format disk,.. again u need to do reallocation...

my suggestion is go with new HDD...i normally reallocate MBR and use that disk as a slave for data dump.(secondary non important data like movies,songs etc).

Dear Jahan,
Thanks
Used BOOTICE to fix the problem.Now OS starts smoothly.Nagging click sound(probable source HDD)has stopped.Let us see for how long this remains effective.BTW a disk check utility has showed 2 bad sectors while in-built disk checking utility says that HDD has no bad sectors.Any suggestions?
