Re: TT - Tech Talk (Computers, Laptops, Tablets, Mobiles, Devices, Systems & Software

Was looking to do some housecleaning and finetune my Laptop - as it is 5 years old - though the config is good i5 with 4 GB RAM.

Have this doubt. Google Chrome is hogging a lot of memory. Is that normal? As there seems to be 3 processes running for Chrome.

Appreciate feedback.

Thanks

I have 2007 make desktop, dual core processor, 2gb ram. multiple tabs in chrome slows pc down, but manageable.
still I kept chrome only as backup browser. both Microsoft edge and opera is super light on resources.
BTW I haven't installed new version of opera 37. it seems it has inbuilt capability of blocking ads, thus faster browsing. :thumb:

I use Opera regularly and it also seems to create multiple instances like Chrome, but yes, it is a much more stable browser than FF.

Multiple Tabs in Chrome means multiple instances. Now Opera too uses chrome engine, so multiple instances of both.

I was big fan of Opera, always less resource hungry. Now both are same.

Oflate Opera, Firefox crash very often. May be some Flash Player issues......:D

Dont worry about memory usage unless you have 1/2gb ram. ram is there to be used.

Firefox is stable for me. So probably something in your setup - addon/flash.
flash - keep it click to play. Also you dont need it unless you have known website that uses flash. I have uninstalled java and flash - i dont miss them, HTML5 is fine.

firefox is very configurable and has some great addons, i tried chrome and opera but never able to move past using them as occasional backups. Anyway, another alternative is vivaldi, i dont use it but its from ex opera devs

Probably does it through service so check there, buts why not keep it running if you use chrome ?
As earlier said by rajesh chrome use lot of resources but good thing good protection. I didn't use chrome. I used mostly firefox with manual update once in month update.

If anyone want can use addon "Calomel SSL Validation" to know how secure is connection validity as we log in banks websites etc. in firefox

Thanks Amit.

I too have Flashplayer on my laptop. What are the advantages of having it vs uninstalling it? What functionality will be affected by its removal?

Another program I have is Adobe reader. I guess that it is required to read pdf's. But if removed will I be able to read pdf's by some default program in Win7?

Not much of an issue if you uninstall Flashplayer.Sometimes the plugin crashes which causes the webpage to hang.

You can have an option to keep it on or off like TracerBullet mentioned.

Some songs and movie websites might be impacted due to flashplayer not present.

Adobe reader you need to read PDF documents or else will not be able to open pdf files.

See options available in Plugins of Firefox.Unless absolutely necessary ,keep the plugins off.

Have not used these ,but you can try.
Adobe package as a whole is bloated.

I use pdfXchangeViewer portable (free) as an alternative, quite nice. Foxit is good too, dont remember why i switched to pdfx from Foxit ( maybe ads not sure )

Sumatra is good and very lighweight as long as you dont need form filling.
