Can you beat the market?

I had read this somewhere in The Economist that:

"You will almost never find a fund manager who can repeatedly beat the market. It is better to invest in an indexed fund that promises a market return but with significantly lower fees."

Also past data has proven 85% of fund managers have underperformed...http://myiris.com/chatmasala/transcript/transSanjiv.php

What do you think?
Is it true that you cannot beat the market?
fund managers never beat the mkt...
mkt beats fund managers !;)

Manali Sharma no. 12 :clapping:

All your posts seem to be about ETF's and Benchmark. ;)

Are you by chance working for or with Benchmark to promote ETF's??

I'm personally interested in both, however soliciting business and leaving URL's is not allowed on this forum. There is a section for businesses to advertise their services though.:thumb:

I could be wrong, but somehow I think not. "What do you think?"

Hi,
Not all my posts are about ETFs and i DO NOT work for Benchmark...I am just an investor who prefers the ETFs over the stocks...
Thanx for the info...i have no intention of advertising any product...

Just curious as to whether you can beat the market...Cuz most fund managers do claim to do so, but have failed miserably...
what do you think?

Dear Manali,
Sincere apologies.

"Just curious as to whether you can beat the market...Cuz most fund managers do claim to do so, but have failed miserably..."

I'm not a fund manager, and honestly I don't know of any who have claimed to have beaten the market. Can I beat the market? Yes, we all can and do at times, at other times we too fail miserably. Almost all fund managers will have beaten the market too at some time, and so can claim with all sincerety to have done so, though overall they may well have underperformed.

The real question is, is beating the market worth all the time and effort and stress? My answer is no, which is why I'm keen on learning about ETF's, specifically market index ETF's.

Perhaps with your knowledge of investing in ETF's you may want to share your experience of selecting entry, exit points, liquidity, derivatives and shorting of ETF's? May I ask if overall you beat the market on a consistent basis? If so, which market?

"what do you think?"

I think thoughts, what else would I think?:thumb:

All the best, happy investing to you....

There are many data and statistics that experienced and professional traders beat market repeatedly for a long time. It depends on your experience, risk management, emotion , fear and greed etc. It is not easy to beat market repeatedly but it is also not impossible to beat market repeatedly.
It all depends on your emotion, experience and risk management etc.:thumb:

There is more money to be made by flowing with the market than trying to beat the market. On a given day the market may end flat. But during the day it might have gone up 70 points, down 100 points up 30 points before to end the day flat. To beat the markets you need only ten point gain but if we had focussed on flowing with the markets rather than beating it would not we have made more?

As always the easiest thing in the market is knowing what to do, the difficult thing is doing it.
