You are right someone must loose for someone other to gain. And only public will loose, not the market operators manipulators and all that.

Yes. It is right in general. Still, there are exceptions. That is why we are here in hope and faith.

True in the derivatives segment.

But look at this hypothetical example in the cash segment.

Stock x goes from Rs 500 to 1000

A buys at 500 and sells to B at 600

B sells to c at 700

and so on till f buys at 1000.

So far all except f the last purchaser has made money and F has not lost a dime yet.:)

I think one thing we all sometimes forget is unless and untill someone sells what he/she has bought then he/she will not realize the profit/loss. Imagine in ur above example F has bought it at 1000 and sees the demand is drying up or hears some negetive news then he/she will get emotionally shaken and on top of that if G a new participant a short seller takes a punt then F will sell his/her position in panic if not then if there are more sellers in the market the price which is@1000 will come down i believe, and atlast F start to realize his/her loss and sell it which G will probably buy it back as he/she is in obligation to buy it back.

Thats quite possible or the stock may go up to 1500. However the point here is there is does not have to be a looser for every winner in the cash segment.:)
Cheers.
