Hedge Funds

Hi All,

I am seeking some information on the front of Indian Hedge Funds. While it seems that there are a number of international hedge funds, we dont see any hedge funds in India.Am I right?
If yes, then what is the reason for it?People say that SEBI/RBI doesnt allow, but can anyone highlight as to why? Why is RBI/SEBI against Indian companies registering as hedge Funds.
If the guidelines are not clear, then why is the case that none of the Indian biggies like reliance have not set up hedge funds?
Can anyone provide a valid, practical answer to this?

Indians are conservative. Besides hedge funds are not for common people. It is for VHNIs. In the US a client has to invest a minmum of $ one million to be a part of a hedge fund.

Thanks for the reply ARMHM. But I doubt that as an explaination. There are many HNIs in India too. Plus, minimum amount even in US is $100,000 and not 1 million.
Also, if we can have international Hedge funds, registering in India as FIIs and trading here, why cant we have Indian Comapnies doing the same.

Why cant an Indian company trade Indian markets and solicit investments? In case it is allowed, why do we not have any prominent players in it?

The protfolio management schemes offered by various brtokers require a minimum capital of 5lkahs INR to be depostied with a 3 year lock in period. If these schemes are successful, that means there are plenty of people willingly depositing 5 lakh ruppees. ANd it means, comapnies can always find those with minm investment of 10 lakh too.

Any other views on the same please?
