Here is wht i had read some time back:
Assume that there are three analysts Mr. X, Mr. Y and Mr. Z and all of them are right 70% of the time (exaggerated) i.e their probability of being right is 0.7.
If we randomly select any one analysts tip then the probability of the tip being right is
0.7 x 0.7 x 0.7 = 0.343 or 34.3% and which will reduce more if more analysts are added.
I think this should clarify the query.
Regards,
Mukesh Udasi

Lets work this the other way round. Suppose CNBC starts off with 3 analysts, and each of them gives a set of calls. You pick the common one, call up your statistician friend who tells you there's only 34% chance that this will succeed. The cookie crumbles and you skip the call.

CNBC overhears your conversation and cuts down the number of analysts to 1. Now, you call up your friend once again, he tells you, there's a 70% chance for the call to succeed. Will you take the call?

'There are lies, damned lies and statistics." -- G B Shaw.

Intuitively, you'd take a call when there are more people supporting the same, assuming each has done an independent analysis (and assuming that you take calls from analysts). Statistics can be misleading.

Correct me if I am wrong.

Trading Tips do not work because one can not make money without doing his/her analysis, its like this you want to swim but want some one else to work for you.
