3 Common Anxiety Traps And How To Avoid Them - Catherine DiBenedetto

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/...?utm_hp_ref=india&ir=India&adsSiteOverride=in

If you’re an anxious person, you’ve probably been told your whole life not to worry so much -- to “stop overthinking things” and “just relax.” By now, you’ve perhaps given up on trying to feel better and resigned yourself to the idea that there’s just something wrong with you. But that’s not true, says Alice Boyes, PhD, author of the The Anxiety Toolkit. “It’s good that we have some people in our tribe who are bold and some who are cautious -- that creates a normal [bell] curve, with different types of people on either end,” Boyes explained in an interview with Health. As she argues in her new book, “the problem is when anxiety gets to the point that it’s paralyzing. I think of these bottlenecks as anxiety traps.” Boyes describes the process of climbing out of these traps as “fine-tuning” your mind. “You’re learning how to work with your own hardware and software in the most effective way,” she says. Here, she offers advice on how to escape from three of the most common traps.

1. You hesitate to act until you’re 100-percent ready A large part of anxiety is having an “intolerance of uncertainty,” says Boyes. It involves a fear of failure, and can keep you mired in contemplation mode. You may have a tendency to consider many ideas without ever trying any of them. Or you may find yourself perpetually stuck in the research phase of projects.

Free yourself: “Anxiety-prone people tend to focus on the worst possible outcomes,” so they worry too much about the risk to take action, explains Boyes. But the truth is, there’s usually a spectrum of possibilities: “When I worked as a therapist, I used to tell my clients to identify the worst thing that could happen, the best thing and the most realistic thing. And to do it in that order.” The idea is to help yourself acknowledge the opportunities that exist along with the risks, so you feel safer when making a move.

Another trick is to make a plan for how you’d cope if the worst-case scenario came true. “Worriers are always thinking, What if? But they never actually answer that question.” Rather than constantly trying to avoid the negative outcomes, make an action plan. This can boost your perception of yourself as someone who can handle adversity when it strikes, which can be calming.

2. You obsess about mistakes Over-thinking past missteps -- meaning you’re replaying them again and again in your mind -- is called ruminating, and it can leave you tangled up in knots.

Free yourself: “Sometimes a good way to escape the cycle is to come up with concrete steps for moving forward,” Boyes says. She suggests you start by jotting down three possible actions you can take now. For example, if you’ve recently hired a new employee who isn’t working out, rather than beat yourself up over missing holes in his resume or other signs, define your options: 1) You could give him less responsibility 2) Provide more guidance 3) Fire him. “Making the list shifts your mind into a more productive mode,” Boyes explains.

3. You dread criticism Anxious people often go out of their way to avoid feedback because they already judge themselves harshly, and criticism from the outside is especially upsetting. “Plus, you may know that you’ll be replaying the critique in your mind for days and weeks to come, and that makes it even harder,” Boyes adds.

Free yourself: Try acting relaxed when you get a review. Even though you may feel crushed or defensive, send physical signals that you’re appreciative, Boyes suggests. Drop your shoulders. Lift your head. Relax your hands. This isn’t just an act: “Your feelings and thoughts will quickly catch up with your nonverbal cues.”

It may help to have some canned responses prepared in case you need to stall. For example, you could say, “Let me think about how best to proceed from here. I’ll email you with some thoughts.” That will buy you some time to mentally process the information and respond in a productive way.

A member PM'ed me to ask about Law of Attraction. The question is : Does it work? Some people are skeptical, some believe it does. The truth is somewhere in between. I am a believer, but just affirmation and visualization is not enough in my view. One has to be consistent, believe, take action and live 'as if' (explained below). These are true stories of famous personalities who believed in their dreams and also in themselves. These stories and notes are from the book - 'How to get from where you are to where you want to be' - The 25 principals of success by Jack Canfield.

Jim Carrey was a struggling young Canadian comic wanting to make it big in the US. So he drove down in his old Toyota to Mulholland Drive, where he could get a view of the city of Los Angeles and sat inside his car, looking at the city below and dreaming of his future. There, he wrote a cheque for himself a check for 10 million US Dollars and dated it for Thanksgiving day, 1995. He added the notation 'for acting services rendered' and carried it in his wallet from that day. Carrey's optimism and tenacity eventually paid off and by 1995, after the huge box office success of his movie : Ave Ventura : Pet Detective, The Mas and Dumb and Dumber, his asking price for a movie was 20 million US dollars for a movie.

Bruce Lee, is one of the greatest martial artist to have every lived. He had written a letter to himself , dated January 1970 and wrote on it 'By 1980 I will be the best known Oriental movie star in the United States and will have secured 10 million dollars. And in return I will give the very best acting I can give possibly give every single time I am in front of the camera, and I will live in peace and harmony. Bruce Lee made three films, and in 1973, his movie Enter the Dragon which made him a star with worldwide fame. The letter written by Bruce Lee to himself is on display on the walls of Planet Hollywood in New York City.

So what are the principals here at work and what are the challenges? Once a goal is set, or visualised, or dream of, there are three things that are going to emerge that stop most people - Fears, Roadblocks and Rationalizations. These are self sabotages that stop one from achieving the goals. Once a goal has been decided, self belief, hard work, consistency of purpose (actions that are taken to realize these goals) are necessary. A seed that is planted in soil, requires water, sunshine and nourishment to grow. It has the untapped potential, but needs a right environment too. Luckily for us humans, we do not depend as much on the external circumstances, but on our mind and ourselves. Self Affirmation and Visualization can help in this process.

Guidelines for creating effective affirmations :

* Start with the words 'I am' - The words 'I am' have power. When spoken or affirmed, our subconscious mind takes it as a command i.e a directive to make things happen.

* Use present tense - Describe what you want as you already have it, or have accomplished it. E.g Wrong way : I will make rupees one crore in trading. Right way : I am enjoying trading and making one crore rupees in trading.

* State in positive - Affirm what you want, and not what you don't want. The subconscious does not understand the word no. E.g Instead of saying 'I am not afraid of flying' say, I am enjoy the thrill of flying.

* Keep it brief - Make it short to be effective.

* Make it specific - Vague affirmations produce vague results. Wrong way : I am driving a red car. Right way : I am driving a red Jeep Wrangler.

* Include an action word ending with ing or ly - E.g I am confidently expressing myself openly and convincingly.

* Include atleast one dynamic emotions or feeling word - Include words of emotional state that you would feel if you achieved your goal. These words include enjoying, happily, celebrating, calmly, delighted, enthusiastic, lovingly, etc. E.g I am ethusiastic and feeling great maintaining my weight at 70 Kgs.

* Add or something better - After making an affirmation, add the word 'or something better'

* Act as if - Want to be confident? Act as if you are confident and in charge and in control of the environment. Walk, talk, feel and think in this manner.

Additional tips :

* Visaulaize what you would like to create. See things as you would like them to be. Place yourself indie the picture or scene. If you think of a car, imagine the car, and see yourself opening the door, getting in, feeling the steering in your hands, getting comfortable and adjusting the seat, starting the car, driving it.... visualizing it as a movie in which you are a part of, and include all or as many sense of your senses as you can (e.g hearing the sound of the car as it starts, and the smell of the new leather interior etc)

* Keep cutting, posters, notes where you can see and read them aloud a few times a day.

* Feel the feelings that you will feel when you achieve that success. The stronger the feelings, the more powerful the visualization.

* Listen to audio/video tapes ads (of your dream car) Put it on as a screen saver etc.

* For all these suggestions to work, you need to take consistent action.

Thanks Dax Devil,

Had read the article before.... My personal beliefs, experience and thinking is that for things to work, we have to work. We can wish, pray, believe, dream etc... but unless we get out of the comfort zone, do the hard work that is necessary, and put ourselves on the line, little else will happen. Yes, people do win lotteries, but that will be one of a million (ignoring the tiny amount of prizes distributed to bait people back into buying them) In the example, one can imagine the time and effort put in by Bruce Lee and Jim Carrey before their dream to come true.... So hard work is surely important, as is being creating and persistent. All these comes from a sense of belief in oneself and what one is doing. And even if there are failures and obstacles, the path one walks on, will lead to another.... at times, maybe even better.

Did Serge Brin and Larry Page dream of becoming billionaire? As a story told many times, they wanted to sell their search company Google for US $1 million to Excite. However, this offer was refused. Brin and Page then dropped their price to $750,000, but Excite still did not buy! Nokia started off as a paper mill company before it went on to be the worlds largest mobile phone company at one time.... These stories tell us that success does always come from the way we expect it to. We need to be receptive and listen to the feedback that life gives us..... but without a vision, it becomes easy to loose the way.....

Hi DSM, visit forbes dot com and read up on billionaire tech venture capitalists (Whatsapp, Twitter, Xiomi etc) featuring in the 2015 Midas list top 10. Particularly this article on Chris Sacca http://www.forbes.com/sites/alexkonrad/2015/03/25/how-venture-cowboy-chris-sacca-made-billions/

A teaser: You have to offer value without expecting anything in return - Chris Sacca

The above line would be a popular quote in coming years, I am sure. :)
