TJ members scientist questions

#1
Hi

I will open this thread in this section of the forum to have a place every member of this forum can burn questions about scientist topics. I am not a scientist, but I am sure we have most knowledgeable members here which also come from that side, are interested in trading as they are here and may even can answer what is asked from members from this forum in this thread.

You also can post scientist questions here you know the answer to it. So others may can learn from you by correcting them when showing that there assumptions or thoughts on that field are worth to improve.

To keep the thread on a good and healthy level when discussions are going on, let me post some rules about what I feel should be clearly considered when posting in such a thread, as discussions for sure will come up:

- If a posted question is not clear to you and you still want to give a possible answer or explanation to it, no problem with that as long as the poster kindly let us know that his post is an: I guess answer and I try to answer post. Non will be unhappy about that and all will accept that.

- If you feel there are still other questions open to you related to any posted questions in what ever way, kindly ask first what may is not clear understood in that question, so in the future many miss understanding or miss interpreting of any question can be avoided.

- If you post a possible answer or explanation to any posted questions or even answers, stay strictly in line with the question or post you want to spot on and do not mix it up with other topics, not related to that question, answer or specific post. This will avoid confusion as some questions may already are difficult to understand include the explanations and answers to it.

- If you posted a possible answer or explanation to any question and an other member did clearly prove you wrong, kindly do accept that and accept that your assumption to that topic at that moment was build on wrong thoughts. Nothing wrong with that. In such cases kindly do not come up with stupid comments to self defend you and accept that you have been wrong in your assumption. Non of us is perfect and non of us can known every thing, so we all make mistakes and have to accept that by even accepting that we just learned some thing new from an other person.

I will start with the following question:

Ebola is in the news day by day. I am clear that Ebola can be transmitted by physical contact with an infected person. Now my question: Can it also be transmitted by mosquitoes? If eg a mosquito bites an infected person A and then bites an infected person B, is person B then infected?

According to what it tells here ,Mosquitoes do not transmit Ebola to humans.

I guess you know the following portion .already .Even so , just in case it is useful somehow to a few here , I thought of adding them along.
How do I protect myself against Ebola?
If you must travel to an area affected by the 2014 Ebola outbreak, protect yourself by doing the following:
• Wash hands frequently or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
• Avoid contact with blood and body fluids of any person, particularly someone who is sick.
• Do not handle items that may have come in contact with an infected person’s blood or body fluids.
• Do not touch the body of someone who has died from Ebola.
• Do not touch bats and nonhuman primates or their blood and fluids and do not touch or eat raw meat prepared from these animals.
• Avoid hospitals in West Africa where Ebola patients are being treated. The U.S. Embassy or consulate is often able to provide advice on medical facilities.
• Seek medical care immediately if you develop fever (temperature of 101.5°F/ 38.6°C) and any of the other following symptoms: headache, muscle pain, diarrhea, vomiting, stomach pain, or unexplained bruising or bleeding.
o Limit your contact with other people until and when you go to the doctor. Do not travel anywhere else besides a healthcare facility.

I had one more useful info about ebola ,a chart in comparison to other deceases ., I have lost that link .As and when I find it shall post it here .
Take Care.

Next question if nobody is asking:

What would happen if the world would stop moving around now? Would we slung away to the space or what would happen with us people?

Interesting thread !! :)

Now to this question... this could be put in 2 parts.

1. If earth stops rotating suddenly : In this case, it will be havoc coz this will cause everything on earth to be swept away in atmosphere.. mountains, forest, water bodies.. human and cars.. :D This could probably end the life on earth.

2. If this happens gradually over billion of years : This could be an adaptable change but again this would mean dt one part of the would get all the sun while the other parts would be in complete dark.

Now my question : Why do we dream ? Put ur answer with psychological and scientific logic :)

Would stop rotating the world stop gravity as it exist? If not, your answer would be wrong half part but partially right when it comes to where the sun will be reached over one year, as the earth is moving around the sun.

So if rotating would stop, gravity still exist and we still run around the sun as it exist, we would be six month on sun shine and six month on dark side. Would I be right with that thoughts? (Bad English but I guess you understand what I mean)

Thank you Somatung , for the appreciation:)

Here is the one I'd mentioned earlier regarding ebola.

And for the 2nd question manishchan has replied .
However this link may give an in depth explanation..

And interestingly there were quite a few links with elaborate explanations ,suggesting interest in this topic!

What would happen if the Earth stopped spinning?
The probability for such an event is practically zero in the next few billion years. If the Earth stopped spinning suddenly, the atmosphere would still be in motion with the Earth's original 1100 mile per hour rotation speed at the equator. All of the land masses would be scoured clean of anything not attached to bedrock. This means rocks, topsoil, trees, buildings, your pet dog, and so on, would be swept away into the atmosphere.

If the process happened gradually over billions of years, the situation would be very different, and it is this possibility which is the most likely as the constant torquing of the Sun and Moon upon the Earth finally reaches it's conclusion. If the rotation period slowed to 1 rotation every 365 days a condition called 'sun synchronous', every spot in the Earth would have permanent daytime or nighttime all year long. This is similar to the situation on the Moon where for 2 weeks the front-side is illuminated by the Sun, and for 2 weeks the back side is illuminated. This situation for the Earth is not the condition of 'stopped' rotation, but it is as close as the laws of physics will let the Earth get.

If it stopped spinning completely...not even once every 365 days, you would get 1/2 year daylight and 1/2 year nightime. During daytime for 6 months, the surface temperature would depend on your latitude, being far hotter that it is now at the equator than at the poles where the light rays are more slanted and heating efficiency is lower. This long-term temperature gradient would alter the atmospheric wind circulation pattern so that the air would move from the equator to the poles rather than in wind systems parallel to the equator like they are now. The yearly change in the Sun's position in the sky would now be just its seasonal motion up and down the sky towards the south due to the orbit of the Earth and its axial tilt. As you moved along constant lines of Earth latitude, you would see the elevation of the Sun increase or decrease in the sky just as we now see the elevation of the Sun change from a single point on the Earth due to the Earth's daily rotation.

For example, if you were at a latitude of +24 degrees North in the Summer and at a longitude where the Sun was exactly overhead, it would slide gradually to the horizon as Fall approached, but since the Sun has moved 90 degrees in its orbit, it would now be due west. Then as we approach Winter, you would now be located on the dark side of the Earth, and would have to travel in longitude to a location 180 degrees around the Earth to see the Sun 1/2 way up the sky because in the Winter, the Sun is 48 degrees south of its summer location in the sky. It's a little confusing, but if you use a globe of the Earth and orient it the right way, you can see how all this works out.

As for other effects, presumably the magnetic field of the Earth is generated by a dynamo effect that involves its rotation. If the Earth stopped rotating, it's magnetic field would no longer be regenerated and it would decay away to some low, residual value due to the very small component which is 'fossilized' in its iron-rich rocks. There would be no more 'northern lights' and the Van Allen radiation belts would probably vanish, as would our protection from cosmic rays and other high-energy particles. This is a significant biohazard.

Interesting but if earth stop rotating. And it it moves around the sun like a car. Then the right side would get all the sun 365 days.

That is definitely a wrong assumption even my English is not on a level to explain it. Sorry dear friend

Edit: Put a glass on your table. Now take a vase, make a mark on it with a pen and take it in your hand. Move it around the glass with out rotating the vase. Follow the mark you made on the vase and what do you recognize? ;)
